Job Description :

THE OPPORTUNITY

BC Ferries provides all major passenger and vehicle ferry services for coastal communities along the west coast of BC. Starting with just two ferries providing service on a single route, we have grown to a fleet of 39 ferries moving over 22 million passengers and 8 million vehicles every year across 25 routes.
We are dedicated to providing safe and efficient travel to our customers, we advocate for the coastal environment and the communities where we operate, and we are proud to connect communities and customers to the people and places important in their lives.
But our role as a ferry service provider goes beyond getting passengers from point A to B. We are also an asset-owner responsible for operating, maintaining, and replacing significant marine and shore-based infrastructure at our 47 terminals.
BC Ferries has an ambitious capital plan and the Terminal Construction department has been growing in response. We are looking for three regular, full-time Project Coordinators to join our team and support the planning and delivery of over 200 capital projects at our 47 terminals.
Our projects span all disciplines and include everything from full berth replacements to marine structure life extensions, terminal redevelopments to building renovations and upgrades, terminal electrification, various mechanical and electrical upgrades, and everything in between. Whether it’s marine, civil, or building projects, you will have the opportunity to work on large, challenging and complex projects, work with diverse stakeholder groups and regulatory agencies at all levels, and deliver results in complex operational environments.
If you enjoy working on the Owner’s side of the table, this is a great opportunity for you! The term “never the same day twice” most certainly describes what you can expect when you join the BC Ferries Terminal Construction team.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TEAM:

Education and Experience:

  • Diploma or Degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, building technology, or related field
  • 2 to 5 years of progressive engineering, construction, or capital project coordination industry experience,
  • Membership, or eligibility to be registered, as an EIT or Professional Engineer with EGBC or a Technologist with ASTTBC, or equivalent.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Experience with an Owner’s organization is considered an asset.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is considered an asset, or willingness to obtain designation in the future upon adequate experience

Knowledge and Competencies:

  • knowledge of project management and engineering principles and methodologies
  • progressive experience in planning, design, procurement, and construction
  • knowledge of construction contract law, public procurement principles, CCDC contracts, and the preparation, review, and interpretation of technical design documentation, drawings, and specification
  • fundamental knowledge and understanding of current standards, codes, bylaws and regulations, zoning and permit requirements, and other regulatory requirements
  • proficient in the use of standard business applications (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • proficient in MS Project (ability to create, update, and manage schedules)
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills which allow you to maintain effective working relationships
  • ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • ability to provide effective solutions to complex problems
  • must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and results-oriented
  • must have a valid BC driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout coastal BC, for up to several days at a time
  • must be fluent in English both verbal and written

We recognize that some people are less likely to apply for a job unless they are a perfect match. At BC Ferries, we’re not looking for “perfect matches.” We’re looking to welcome people to our diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace. So, if you’re excited about this role but don’t have every single qualification, we encourage you to apply anyway. Whether it’s this role or another one, you may be just the right candidate.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Program Manager - Terminal Construction, the Project Coordinator will

  • provide professional and technical support to Project Managers or Senior Project Managers delivering civil, marine, and building infrastructure projects at various locations across coastal BC;
  • assist project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and monthly progress reporting;
  • organize infrastructure inspection and site investigations and supervise site activities;
  • support design development and the procurement of services and goods; preparing tenders and contracts;
  • work with a variety of contractors, consultants, permitting and regulatory agencies at all levels, First Nations communities and the public;
  • perform on-site supervision and construction management for select projects;
  • maintain document control and support or lead other terminal construction related tasks;
  • support departmental leadership across a wide variety of administrative or technical activities and assignments; and
  • independently manage the planning and execution of smaller and less complex projects with guidance from a Project Manager.

The ideal candidate is a generalist with a technical and project background and has the ability to learn and manage new technical areas. You are an energetic team player and detail-oriented professional with a positive attitude and excellent communication and interpersonal skills, allowing you to build and maintain relationships with the project team, department staff, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders. You are a self-starter who displays strong time management and organizational skills. You display good judgement in all aspects of your work, and can demonstrate a willingness, ability, and the flexibility to undertake additional training and duties required for the position.
The candidate should also have the ability and willingness to travel from their point of assembly to terminal project sites (frequent), work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (occasional), work at heights or work near/over water (infrequent), work long hours, evenings, or weekends to support project activities (occasional), and undertake assignment at remote terminal locations (infrequent).
