WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field;
  • 5 or more years’ of progressively responsible project development experience with a proven track record of developing successful renewable projects;
  • Additional experience developing conventional electricity projects considered a plus;
  • Ability to work collaboratively leading a team of high-performing subject matter experts toward a common goal;
  • Demonstrated ability to build trust in relationships with internal and external counterparts including customers, vendors, and other project stakeholders;
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Effective Cross-functional coordination and leadership skills;
  • Well-developed presentation skills with the ability to present to executive teams;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced skills in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Project Oracle Primavera, and project management techniques would be an asset.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking to hire an experienced project developer to join our North American Growth team to advance the development of TransAlta’s clean energy portfolio. The ideal candidate will foster a customer-driven growth program that ensures TransAlta is uniquely and competitively positioned to secure and deliver growth opportunities. This involves developing and maintaining strong collaboration with internal subject matter experts, external consultants and project stakeholders to ensure growth projects progress smoothly through the development life cycle using sound project management practices. As the Project Developer, you will lead the development of wind, solar, storage and conventional energy projects from ideation to Final Investment Decision when projects transition to the construction and execution group. You will oversee, evaluate, and execute development opportunities that will increase the value of TransAlta’s common equity and generate superior industry returns in targeted geographies and technologies. The role will be focused on markets across Canada and the United States. Travel across North America is required.
The role is based at our Head Office in Calgary, Alberta. However, the position could also be located in Boulder, Colorado, or San Diego, California. Depending on the candidate’s location, remote work arrangements may also be considered.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Lead development activities of early, mid, and late stages wind, solar, storage, and conventional energy projects located within Canada and the United States;
  • Align projects with company’s long-term growth strategy and initiatives;
  • Lead project development teams in a matrix environment to ensure resources are focused on the right activity at the right time to meet project schedule and budget;
  • Manage project development through all stages of development, from concept evaluation to hand-off to the execution team for construction. This will include leading the following activities:
  • Work with the Community Relations Team to manage outreach and other stakeholder management activities;
  • Working with the land team to secure site control for development prospects;
  • Secure project permits at the local, provincial / state, and federal level;
  • Secure transmission and interconnection rights;
  • Oversee project layouts and collaborate with project engineering and construction on design, engineering, and pre-construction planning activities;
  • Optimize project variables to improve both technical feasibility and financial returns;
  • Coordinate across expert hubs to ensure all project risks are identified, incorporated, and mitigated where possible;
  • Partner with the Origination Team to secure long-term offtake agreements and develop competitive pricing strategies;
  • Assist in negotiating various commercial contracts, such as Power Purchase Agreements, Turbine Supply Agreements, and Interconnection agreements, and construction related agreements;
  • Lead project budgeting and scheduling; and
  • Represent TransAlta with customers, landowners, government officials, and other stakeholders.
