Description:

As a Project Developer, you will plan, develop, and manage the implementation of renewable energy projects, such as solar power plants. The Developer plays a critical role in identifying suitable sites for renewable energy projects, securing financing, and managing all aspects of project development from initial planning to construction and commissioning.
The successful Project Developer must navigate complex regulatory requirements, manage stakeholder relationships, and balance competing project costs, financing, and technical feasibility priorities. They must also deeply understand energy markets, technologies, and emerging trends to identify and capitalise on new opportunities for renewable energy development.
Position of the job in the organisation: The successful candidate will report directly to the Project Developer.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering, Business Administration, or related field; a master’s is a plus.
  • Experience in renewable energy project development, focusing on utility-scale projects.
  • Strong in IPP models, project finance, solar PV development, and commercial aspects; proven in deal closure, client acquisition, and bids.
  • Skilled in project management, team leadership, and stakeholder communication.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel within South Africa and across Africa as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify potential sites for solar projects and conduct feasibility studies to assess suitability.
  • Negotiate and secure land leases or purchase agreements with landowners and stakeholders, considering solar resource availability, land use regulations, and environmental factors.
  • Oversee project development, including equipment selection, system design, and construction management.
  • Develop and manage project budgets, including cost estimates, financial models, and funding strategies.
  • Secure financing from investors or lenders and manage financial risks associated with the project.
  • Collaborate with finance and investment teams to optimise project financial structures.
  • Navigate regulatory requirements and obtain necessary permits for project advancement.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with environmental impact assessments, land use permits, and zoning regulations.
  • Develop strategies to streamline the permitting process and mitigate delays.
  • Manage relationships with landowners, investors, contractors, regulators, and local communities.
  • Maintain open communication channels with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, addressing concerns and resolving conflicts.
  • Support business development by identifying partnerships and opportunities for project acquisitions, joint ventures, or portfolio expansion.
  • Stay informed on market trends, policy developments, and emerging technologies to inform project strategies.
  • Identify and assess project risks, implementing mitigation strategies and maintain risk registers.
  • Prepare regular progress reports, including financial updates, permitting status, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, contracts, permits, and compliance records.
  • Ensure compliance with internal reporting requirements and external regulatory obligations.
  • Perform any other job duties associated with this role.
