Description:
A Senior Engineer designs and plans processes, tools, and equipment needed for high quality, efficient planning, construction, repair, testing/commissioning, and delivery of ships, applying practical job knowledge typically obtained through significant work experience. The Senior Engineer may manage projects/processes, working independently with limited supervision and coach & review the work of lower-level professionals. Problems faced by a Senior Engineer are difficult and sometimes complex. Senior Engineers will be expected to work in an assigned job scope across theoretical, practical, and/or lean engineering disciplines in a shipbuilding environment.
- Actively manage planned and emergent work within their assigned scope.
- Support the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
- Originate complex deliverables and develop statements of work for external subcontractors
- Review technical deliverables and products developed by Engineering staff and external stakeholders
- Author Processes and Procedures documenting how recurring Engineering Support and Deliverables in their assigned discipline are created.
- Identify and manage mitigation plans for risks associated with their engineering discipline.
- Identify opportunities and lead initiatives for Continuous Improvement within their engineering discipline.
- Knowledge – education, certificates, licenses, registration, and knowledge required
- Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.) or equivalent, Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or equivalent
- Expert knowledge and application of maritime regulatory authorities (LR, TC, IMO, etc.) and other industry standards (e.g. ASME, IEEE, ASTM, etc.) applicable to job posting
- Expert knowledge of ship specific discipline applicable to job posting (hull structure, ship arrangements, ship piping systems, propulsion, HVAC, electrical, mechanical, producibility, manufacturing)
- Knowledge and genuine interest of naval / modern ship design and construction methods
- Technical Skills – required skills to apply knowledge
- Demonstrated experience (typically 8+ years) in ship design or construction or relevant complex industrial and manufacturing environment
- Experience as a cognizant engineer (or system / technical owner) over one or more ship’s systems or shipyard functions, or design functions.
- Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, navigate 3D model and/or simulations, develop & markup drawings, develop presentations and reports, develop technical specifications, perform investigation on complex issues
- Analytical problem solving on complex issues
- Ability to develop statement of work for subcontractors
- Social Process Skills – required skills for effective working relationships
- Verbal and written communication of complex issues to internal and external stakeholders
- Cross-functional problem solving from technical & business perspective
- Able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast paced, dynamic environment
- Make risk-based technical decisions
