KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

As a Project Manager you will:

  • Lead multiple projects or a single project (dependent upon size and complexity) with emphasis on delivering their outcomes and benefits.
  • Work with business, product and technical leads, and subject matter experts across TfL to shape, gain authority for and deliver your assigned projects.
  • Agree resource allocation and availability for your projects, and matrix manage the project team working on them.
  • Work with the Commercial team to influence and shape contracts and frameworks to ensure TfL leverages the best value for money on our projects and programmes.
  • Hold internal and external suppliers to account for their delivery requirements, review acceptability of their deliverables and make recommendations on contract payments.
  • Deliver your projects to agreed quality, time and budget tolerances following requisite governance project documentation, regular reviews and effective management of risks and dependencies.
  • Set high standards of project management practice and support individuals within your team to meet those standards.
  • Develop effective mutual relationships with your colleagues, stakeholders and suppliers, including with other project managers to clearly identify and manage inter-dependencies and interfaces.

  • Effective written and verbal communication, and the ability to influence people at all levels across and outside of the organisation.
  • Matrix management of multi-disciplinary teams to deliver effective end-to-end performance.
  • A positive, can-do attitude, with focus on deadlines, and ability to deliver solutions when met with challenging issues and situations.
  • Planning and progress management of complex projects through the whole lifecycle.
  • Budget management, accurate financial forecasting and variance tracking.
  • Application of risk management methods and techniques.

Knowledge

  • ESSENTIAL - In-depth understanding of all aspects of project management and control, including finances.
  • ESSENTIAL - Good understanding of technology systems and services, and their development and support lifecycles.
  • ESSENTIAL - Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office or equivalent.
  • DESIRABLE - Good understanding of procurement processes, commercial and contract management.
  • DESIRABLE - Accreditation in a recognised methodology such as APM, PRINCE2 or MSP.
  • DESIRABLE - Good knowledge of relevant national and international legislation relating to Government / Public Sector IT – e.g. GDPR, EU Procurement Directives, IT security mandates and Freedom of Information Act.

Experience

  • ESSENTIAL - Experience of forming complex projects, ensuring that their scope, requirements, governance and controls, roles and responsibilities, interfaces and project success criteria are correctly and properly established and managed throughout to ensure effective and timely delivery.
  • ESSENTIAL - Experience of being accountable and personally making a difference for the successful end-to-end delivery of multiple and varied technically complex projects.
  • ESSENTIAL - Experience of collaborating with sponsors and stakeholders, including reporting on progress at formal project reviews, to achieve the agreed outcomes and benefits.
  • DESIRABLE – Experience of delivering technology-driven / IT projects in a large and complex matrix organisation.
  • DESIRABLE - Experience of delivery through external suppliers, including successfully managing and negotiating on commercial and contract issues.
  • DESIRABLE - Experience of line managing other project management professionals.

Responsibilities:

As a Technology and Data (T&D) Project Manager you will work alongside over 150 other project and programme management professionals based at North Greenwich, where we are in the office 50% of the week in line with TfL policy. We work on a diverse range of projects, including digital and software delivery, technology infrastructure changes, and procurements of systems and services, with our projects and programmes are often a combination of these.
We are looking for high calibre Project Managers who are proactive and take ownership for their projects, including finances, anticipating risks and issues, and actively managing their resolution. We expect you to develop a deep understanding of the content of your projects, and provide leadership in delivering them that goes beyond just following project management processes. It is also important that once in post you continue to proactively develop your skills and knowledge in any areas where you are less experienced to meet the evolving pipeline of projects.
