Description:

ABOUT YOU

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic and as passionate as we are about delivering projects successfully, and who want to contribute to growing a robust project management community and capability not only within the UK, but across BMT global operations.
Preferably you will be familiar with delivering or supporting projects in an engineering service environment which is built upon defining and managing contractual relationships and with a strong financial performance perspective. This includes awareness of the project definition elements of bids and their relationship to subsequent project delivery. We want to hear from people who are able to recognise, understand and undertake project management duties across the spectrum of predictive (plan-based) to adaptive (iterative) approaches. Whether you are familiar with the delivery of products or systems, engineering services, new capabilities, software applications, IT systems, cyber services, environmental systems, or business transformations, we would love to hear from you.
To provide operational flexibility a Project Professional may be expected to operate across the different delivery domains within BMT – which could give rise to some varied challenges for you - but ideally will have some knowledge and experience in one or more specific domains where the nature of the project demands it for maximum effectiveness. More information on the range of BMT services is available at www.bmt.org. At this time our preference is for those with maritime vessel, maritime systems, cyber service delivery or technical documentation domain experience - but we thrive on diverse backgrounds and experiences and learning from each other, so just a desire to work in these areas is welcomed.
You will be able to undertake project definition and delivery responsibilities equivalent to SFIA8 Responsibilities Level 3 (Apply), although the nature of the client relationships requires an ability to “Influence” at Level 4. The expectation is that in the Project Manager role your competency in project management skills should be at or equivalent to SFIA8 Project Management (PRMG) Skill Level 4.

A Project Professional in BMT is expected to hold, or be able to achieve swiftly, one or more of the following Project Management-related qualifications (or their equivalent):

  • APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ)
  • PMI Certificated Associate in Project Management (CAPM®)
  • Agile Business Consortium/APMG AgilePM Foundation
  • Axelos PRINCE2®, P3O©, MSP© Foundation
  • Praxis Framework™ Foundation

But we love to develop our people, so if these are not held right now, we will help you to achieve a recognised reflection of your capabilities. We recognise that project management careers develop through a myriad of different journeys, but a degree-level qualification in a project management- or engineering-related discipline would be desirable. You will be self-motivated with a proactive approach to continual professional development. We value professional qualifications and membership of appropriate bodies such as the APM or PMI and we can provide support, training and tailored experience in order for you to achieve these, if not already held, as well as paying for membership of one professional body.
Due to the nature of the work, this position will require full UK Security Clearance (SC) and you should have resided in the UK for more than 5 years. No applications will be considered if you are not in a position to either attain or transfer the security clearance.

Responsibilities:

We are increasingly using our knowledge and expertise to drive transformative designs, technology and solutions around the world that will contribute towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). BMT’s focus SDGs are Climate Action and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. These goals matter most to our stakeholders and are where we believe we can have the greatest impact towards a better future.
We are seeking individuals who are passionate about addressing these global challenges and are proactive in finding opportunities to integrate sustainable practices as part their role.
As a Project Professional in BMT you will be able to enjoy working in a varied project environment as you help to define, lead and manage projects where key outcomes are delivered successfully for our clients within contractual service-based relationships. You will be responsible for your contribution to a critical element of BMT’s ability to continually deliver insight, innovation and results across multiple domains.

A Project Professional at BMT is required to undertake a range of tasks and duties related to:

  • The Project Manager role, tasked with the identification, definition, delivery, and closure of work packages, simple or standard projects or groups of projects, and project-related activities throughout the bid and project delivery lifecycles.
  • Leadership of projects in a commercially focused, contract-based environment and delivering strong financial focus, and the ability to manage and report commercial and financial performance.
  • The development and support of the Project Management Function and best practice within BMT (and in associated professional bodies).
  • Mentoring or coaching of other staff undertaking project delivery tasks.
  • The line management of other Project Professional colleagues within the Function.

BMT’s projects are spread across our various sites in the UK, with emphasis at the present time on our facilities across Bath, Bristol, Weymouth, Fareham, Plymouth, Southampton and London, but we operate flexibly according to the nature of the project and the relationship with the Client. We therefore typically operate from these base locations but can include other BMT offices (see www.bmt.org for locations), home-working or working at Client sites – which may include overseas locations. Travel and subsistence to and from your base location to Client sites or other BMT offices will be provided in line with BMT’s policy.
We can work on a full or part time basis according to the roles that the Project Professional fulfils, although the nature of the Project Manager role often drives regular engagement with project teams on a daily basis. But we want the best people for our roles, so we welcome any applications that will help us to continue to deliver success.
