The Office of the Controller is responsible for government accounting policies and financial reporting, financial management and control policies, risk management (financial and audit risk) and financial business process management. The division is a leader in sponsoring, supporting, and facilitating initiatives with outcomes focused on effectiveness, efficiency, best practice, and continual improvement by the government financial community.

QUALIFICATIONS

University graduation in a related field plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

The following are considered assets.

  • Strong technical background in financial systems
  • Experience working within the public sector or with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS)
  • Familiarity with the Government of Alberta’s 1GX system
  • Knowledge of master data governance and reporting processes
  • Hands-on experience with system integrations
  • Troubleshooting skills and experience with financial process automation
  • Proficiency in using data to improve processes.
  • Strong time-management skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will:

  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and management of GoA-wide projects, ensuring they align with government strategies and are executed on time. You will develop comprehensive project plans, track progress, identify risks, and provide support in mitigating those risks.
  • Serve as a key liaison between project teams and stakeholders across ministries, facilitating communication, organizing meetings, and ensuring project actions are completed within set timelines.
  • Contribute to the development and documentation of new financial processes, and assist the manager, the 1GX Centre of Excellence (COE) team and other stakeholders with system configuration, updates, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with the CCR team on preparing and enhancing government accountability reports, such as the consolidated financial statements, Blue Book, and other disclosures. This includes analyzing financial data, identifying discrepancies, and proposing corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with other teams within the Office of the Controller to improve master data governance, streamline reporting processes, and optimize the use of the 1GX system across different finance modules.
  • Provide technical support to ministries and 1GX team to identify the needs for improvements or options to address issues helping to ensure financial activities are completed accurately and timely. You will also support the development of training materials and deliver

    training sessions to the Government of Alberta’s finance community on system updates and process improvements.
