The Model Shop at Roke provides both a planned and reactive service to projects and engineers across the Roke site. It provides quick turnaround solutions to mechanical designs that arise with various projects, helping to achieve critical deadlines. Keeping the prototype manufacture of conceptual designs in house as much as possible, aids with the sensitive nature of the work that Roke is involved with. A broad set of skill requirements, coupled with the versatile capability enables the Model Shop to provide a key hardware support service to all projects across the business.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Technical Apprenticeship in Engineering or relevant subject AND/OR
  • Technical Degree in Engineering or relevant subject AND/OR
  • Equivalent relevant work experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • A good overall understanding of mechanical engineering principles
  • Experience programming, setting and operating CNC and manual machines
  • Experience working on projects from initial design through to product manufacture
  • Ability to use Computer Aided Manufacture software (AlphaCAM )
  • Ability to work from both 2D drawings and 3D models
  • Ability to work to tight engineering tolerances

Responsibilities:

PRIMARY JOB PURPOSE

  • To manufacture components and assemblies in line with project requirements with the use of manual and CNC machinery (lathes & mills), traditional toolmaking equipment and sheet metal fabrication equipment.
  • Working closely with engineering and development teams to develop and produce effective engineering prototype solutions to meet project timelines.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Producing mechanical components, sub-assemblies and systems using engineering plans or drawings.
  • To program, set and operate CNC & Manual Machinery
  • To be able to fabricate sheet metal parts
  • 3D printing using SLA and FDM technologies
  • To provide advice and troubleshooting assistance to the engineering community.
  • To work closely with the Engineers, Product and Project Managers
  • Ensure our workshop environments are safe and that operations are carried out in a safe and controlled manner
  • Always fully comply with Roke’s policies and proceduresUndertake such other reasonable duties, commensurate with the job holder’s experience and qualifications, as may be required for the smooth operation of the business
