HOW YOU’LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Vinney Green Secure Children’s Home offers young people a safe, caring environment, where they will experience quality care, education, vocational and life skills training.
As PSHE Instructor, you will work closely with our Life Skills Instructor to create, find and deliver engaging lessons which help support young people in their present circumstances and also equip them for a future beyond Vinney Green. If you feel comfortable and confident teaching young people about Relationships, Sex, Health, Emotional Literacy and Social & Employability skills then we would love to hear from you
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
- It is essential that you have GCSE C grade (old) or level 4 (new) in English and Maths or equivalent qualification or equivalent relevant experience.
- You must have a qualification or significant previous experience in PSHE and will have strong subject knowledge
- You will have a either a qualification in working with children and young people and/or considerable experience of working with young people in a relevant setting
- It is essential for you to have good interpersonal skills with both adults and young people. For example the ability to effectively de-escalate conflict between young people, able to communicate concerns with relevant managers.
- Ideally, you will have a teaching and/or training qualification or Teaching, coaching or training experience with young people aged 11-18
- It would be beneficial to have previous experience in a specialist setting: SEND in mainstream, special school, special unit etc, particularly with pupils who present with SEMH.
Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.
We welcome applications from both experienced candidates who can work with difficult, troubled and vulnerable children and who believe they can make a difference, and from relatively newly qualified teachers who are excited about being involved in this kind of work.
You should enjoy teaching small groups of children in a highly structured yet flexible and often challenging environment. Experience with pupils who demonstrate behaviours that challenge, including those who present with SEMH, a huge amount of patience, a good sense of humour and great flexibility are very helpful for this role.
We would also welcome applications from Primary or Secondary specialist teachers who are looking for a challenge in their career.
THINGS WE NEED YOU TO KNOW:
Working Pattern: Permanent / 37 hours per week (Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5.00pm, Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm).
The post is subject to JNCTRE conditions.
This post is subject to a Disqualification from Working with Children declaration.
The salary is plus a Secure Unit allowance of £2,583 per annum, pro rated to hours worked.
Please note that school holiday closures at Vinney Green are at variance with local authority school closures. In most cases teachers will be unable to take more than 2 consecutive weeks annual leave at any one time.
Young people can present physically threatening behaviour and the environment can become tense and anxiety provoking, so for everybody’s safety surveillance cameras are in use in most areas of the building.
Vinney Green operates a full non-smoking environment, and there is no provision to facilitate smoking anywhere on site. Staff’s personal belongings are required to be left in a provided locker on entry into the building and we may require you to undertake a further physical fitness check.
This role is demanding and there will be some physically active aspects to the job, including ‘Restrictive Physical Intervention’ which you will be expected to complete 2 days of training in prior to commencing your role - but we can assure you that this will be one of the most rewarding jobs that you will ever do!
Responsibilities:
