BACKGROUND/QUALIFICATIONS

Has obtained a recognized nursing license (RPN licensing) and must be in good standing. Written and verbal fluency in English is required. Has demonstrated excellent leadership skills (i.e. Diversicare/Verve Senior Living Competencies) and organizational skills. Must have proficient computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel and MDS/RAI). Has 1 year of experience as a Registered Practical Nurse. Has some experience working within a union setting. A resident-oriented individual, whose visions and values align with those of Diversicare.

Responsibilities:

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE

Under the direction of the Health and Wellness Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse performs nursing interventions with residents within his or her scope of practice. This person utilizes the principal functions of nursing services in licensed care and the professional standards of practice of the applicable provincial College of Nurses and assists with the implementation of current provincial Ministry and company policy and procedure.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates in the Verve Quality Improvement (VQI) program.
  • Distributes medications as per resident medication times.
  • Performs treatments to all residents who require them within their area. Makes assessments regarding changes in a residents’ condition (i.e. falls, wounds, etc).
  • Updates resident care plans according to residents’ changing needs. Completes all medication, treatment and incidental charting for residents on the nursing unit.
  • Facilitates communication with all nursing staff regarding the care or concerns that have arose during the shift.
  • Initiates referrals to interdisciplinary team members (i.e. the Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physiotherapist, Dietician, etc).
  • Works closely with and facilitates interactions between departments to ensure the best possible care and service is provided to residents (i.e. Ensuring pleasurable dining experience occurs with each meal by ensuring the front line nursing staff is collaborating with the dietary staff).
  • Utilizes and allocates resources effectively by distributing, monitoring and maintaining adequate nursing supplies and equipment on the unit. Notifies the Registered Nurse or Director of Care when a new supply is required.
  • Provides direction to front line nursing staff to ensure use of equipment and supplies is in accordance with policies and procedures, manufacturer’s instructions, and health and safety regulations.
  • Supervises and investigates staff actions or concerns to determine the proper resolution. If staffing or employee issues continually arise, addresses the matter with the Registered Nurse, Assistant Director of Care or Director of Care on duty.
  • Redirects and mentors front line healthcare staff when required. Provides assistance on the floor when the front line staff require it (i.e. transfers, lifts, etc).
  • Complies with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems. This includes recognizing health and safety hazards, reporting incidents, fulfilling responsibilities under the applicable legislation, as well as participating in in-services and fire drills. Takes on a leadership role and complies with infection prevention and control guidelines, and outbreak management guidelines. Complies with all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
  • Manages individuals and situations that are not in compliance with the guidelines.
  • Completes all required mandatory training/education.
  • Analyzes and provides action plans in conjunction with other departments (i.e. dining services, life enrichment, etc).
  • Analyzes data (i.e. incident reports) and summarizes into a report.
  • Performs other related tasks as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
