Description:

Novo Holdings is seeking an Associate or Senior Associate to join the Public Equity Venture Investments team in their San Francisco office to focus on life science investments. Title will be commensurate with level of experience.
Novo Holdings is a holding and investment company responsible for managing the assets of the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The purpose of Novo Holdings is to improve people’s health and the sustainability of society and the planet by generating attractive long-term returns for the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
Wholly owned by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Novo Holdings is the controlling shareholder of Novo Nordisk and Novonesis and manages an investment portfolio with a long-term return perspective. In addition to managing a broad portfolio of equity, fixed income private equity and real assets, Novo Holdings is a world-leading life sciences investor and invests in life science companies at all stages of development through its Seeds, Venture, Growth, and Principal Investments teams. The Novo Holdings Venture Investments (NHVI) team primarily invests in biotechnology and high-growth revenue-stage medical technology companies.
As of year-end 2023, Novo Holdings had total assets of EUR 149 billion.

REQUIREMENTS

You will be part of our team responsible for originating, analyzing and managing NHVI’s public equity investments. Our public investing activities implement a long-only strategy focused on small and mid-cap biotech and medtech companies. We have a broad mandate to invest in all therapeutic areas and may invest in crossover, IPO, follow-on financings, PIPEs and open market transactions. As the public team works alongside the private equity team, the role will also provide exposure to the firm’s venture capital and structured finance investment strategies. Specific responsibilities may include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Assessment of investment opportunities based on the clinical unmet, scientific rationale, strength of management teams, clinical data and development plans, regulatory outlook, commercial opportunities, intellectual property, competitive landscape and valuation.
  • Conduct primary due diligence of new investment opportunities, which can include:
  • An in-depth review of relevant scientific and clinical publications
  • Review and distillation of company provided materials
  • Competitive landscaping
  • Consultation with KOLs, physicians, payers and other relevant experts
  • Prepare and present investment materials and supporting documentation to guide investment decisions
  • Monitor and assist with management of public investments
  • Attend scientific and broker conferences
  • Assist in operations and other ad hoc tasks to support portfolio management
  • Collaborate with other areas of the organization to support other Novo Holdings activities

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

We are seeking a candidate with:

  • A strong scientific and/or clinical background, with a Ph.D. in biological sciences or chemistry, or a M.D.
  • 2+ years non-academic work experience in analyzing biotech companies and assets – ideally in buy-side or sell-side equity research, investment banking, management consulting with a focus on biopharma or in business development; experience analyzing medtech companies is a plus
  • Proficiency with financial statement analysis, accounting, and financial modeling
  • Experience working with industry databases, libraries and other data sources to assist in researching companies, clinical trials, competitive positioning, and commercial opportunities is preferred
  • Proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint
