About Us
The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.
The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.
The QFD is an organisation that is focused on reframing the department’s relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organisations through the Path to Treaty, Closing the Gap and building our cultural capability.
Purpose of the role
The Public Information and Warnings unit provides strategic and operational response oversight of the public information capability to ensure operational planning and readiness at the state, regional and local levels. The team works in conjunction with other teams across the department and external stakeholders, responsible for elements of public information to ensure Queensland communities receive timely, accurate and relevant information during incidents and disasters, to ensure the safety of the community and effective incident management.
Reporting to the Executive Manager, you will contribute to the capability development of the public information and warnings function and assist in the delivery of timely and quality incident-based information, and support the public information function during times of emergency event operations. You will be responsible for providing efficient, effective and confidential administrative support, and undertake work across a broad range of service delivery activities, including to support staff with the coordination of resourcing and finance management, information management and documentation control, and secretariate duties, as required. You will also support the delivery of public information and warnings training to enhance community safety and operational capabilities.
Key requirements

Highly desirable requirements

  • Minimum C Class Driver’s License (non-restricted).
  • Government purchasing (Level 1).
  • Working knowledge in the use of human resource, finance systems (i.e. SAP or similar finance management system) and document management systems and reporting.

Special requirements

  • It is expected that the incumbent will participate in an out-of-hours roster during emergency event operations. This may require work outside of normal working hours (e.g. night shift), including weekends, working extended hours and may include deployment to other parts of the state.

Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

  • Assist with the ongoing development of the public information and warnings function, including participating in planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide financial and business compliance support, including revenue, expense, procurement and contract administration coordination to meet departmental financial obligations and objectives.
  • Provide high-level administrative and program support, including maintaining document management systems, filing and tracking of training and travel records through SharePoint web management or other storage systems.
  • Undertake research, analysis of systems and public information platforms, including development and improvement of procedures and systems used to deliver effective public information, and provide advice to support business and operational decision making processes.
  • Liaise and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, to support key processes, procedures and delivery of unit outcomes.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of briefings, reports and submissions relating to public information during a range of incidents, emergencies and disasters in accordance with departmental requirements and governance.
  • Support implementation of statewide capability enhancement plans, and public information and warnings training to ensure a consistent approach to providing information and service delivery.
  • Provide support and administrative duties during emergencies and disasters, which may involve short-notice activation and rostering outside of business hours.
