KĀ PŪKEKA ME KĀ WHEAKO/YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate will be expected to have:

  • A strong proficiency in the Māori language and a high-level Māori Performing Arts experience.
  • Teaching experience of Māori Performing Arts and language from beginners to advanced levels.
  • A PhD (or close to completion) in a field relevant to Māori Studies preferred. Masters degree minimum, and or relevant postgraduate qualifications.
  • Evidence of an ability to work with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A strong commitment to developing collaborative working relationships with colleagues.
  • Commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tahu, as mana whenua in the region and broad knowledge of the cultural traditions of other iwi/hapū.

Please note experience in teaching te reo Māori, Māori society would be an advantage. We also encourage applications from researchers whose work considers the indigenous dimensions of environmental, social, cultural and wellbeing realities.

Responsibilities:

Applications are invited for Lecturer/Senior Lecturer position in Te Tumu, School of Māori, Pacific & Indigenous Studies. The position offers an academic career in a well-established and progressive School with a proud teaching and research record. This is a full time (1 FTE), permanent position based in Dunedin.
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching the Māori Performing Arts papers (haka/waiata/composition) and may be required to teach tikanga Māori and aspects of te ao Māori. The candidate will also develop and maintain a programme of research and publication. In addition, the candidate will also be expected to contribute to the administration of the School and undertake service work with the School, the University and its broader communities.
Te Tumu has a strong postgraduate research culture and the successful candidate would therefore be expected to undertake the supervision of postgraduate students.
