Description:
TEAM OVERVIEW
Our R&D team are responsible for preparing R&D and patent box claims, alongside preparing grant applications for clients of the Firm. Our client base ranges from high technology start-ups through to large multinational businesses. The team prepare a large number of claims for SME tech, architects and pharma businesses, and are therefore looking to recruit someone who has a STEM background to help assist in preparing these claims. This role would provide the ideal starting point to begin a career specialising in R&D tax.
In addition, given the breadth of projects we support, the team have access to a varied client portfolio, and as such, everyone will have a hands-on experience of all aspects of preparing a claim. Therefore, this role offers the opportunity to build a broad-based career and to be the lead R&D specialist on many fabulous clients.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- 2.1 Degree, ideally in science, technology, engineering or information science subject along with a detailed interest in computer modelling or programming or the application of technology within innovative businesses
- A minimum of 120 UCAS Tariff points from your top 3 A-levels, or equivalent (300 using the old tariff).
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Demonstrable English Language skills, both verbally and written, with experience of writing reports or longer documents
- Experience with preparing a presentation or dissertation on a technical subject as part of degree course
- Interest in latest developments in innovation and technology
- Communication skills, in particular an ability to articulate complex topics in layman’s terms and discuss issues with senior staff.
- Willingness to adapt claim processes and documentation to meet the ever-changing needs of clients and HMRC.
- MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Problem solving skills; able to prioritise workload and be self-sufficient, a multi-tasker.

Responsibilities:
ROLE OVERVIEW
The core of this role is to prepare claims for the Firm’s tech and IT R&D tax client base and liaise with clients to ensure their claims are prepared on time. As this aspect of business has substantial room to grow, we expect new team members to actively participate in learning opportunities to help develop the tech side of the business. This role will provide the successful candidate with a springboard to build their career and to progress as a key member of the R&D tech team within Buzzacott.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure that the R&D tax claims in the tech and IT sectors are prepared on time and meet our quality standards. Ensuring claims contain sufficient technical content to meet HMRC’s requirements that we are seeing from compliance check campaigns.
- Engage with IT claim training and wider R&D tax credits training offered by the team and third parties. As part of this role, we would expect the candidate to have an interest in HMRC’s position in relation to IT claims, and to suggest how processes and templates could be adapted to reflect these changes.
- Have a technical knowledge of IT and/or software development and to be able to incorporate this knowledge into the claim content.
- Interest in staying up to date with software and technology.
- Deliver technical and costing aspects of the IT claims within R&D tax team and seek to deliver this work within project budgets and KPIs.
- Be an active team member and offer up suggestions and ideas.
