Job Description
As R&D Patent Information Specialist in the R&D Front End Innovation Team (based in the Global Research & Development, Quality and Food Compliance department), you’ll be part of an incredibly diverse group that’s all about learning, growing, and supporting each other—just the way we like it!
Your main focus will be to search and connect patents with JDE’s innovation and technology development needs; bringing insights to support business strategy and flag project risks and challenges. You’ll also be the interface between our R&D associates and IP team to drive patent strategy for JDE to secure its competitive edge. We’re not just looking for expertise, but also for someone with strong people skills and a drive to succeed. You’ll play a key role in making a real impact in our value chain.
Here’s what you’ll be responsible for:
- Collaborating with R&D and the IP team to understand project goals and IP/Competitor Intelligence requirements, reviewing patent data and making project IP recommendations.
- Devising and executing robust search strategies to identify relevant patents for project landscaping, patentability, risk assessment (FTO) and opposition purposes.
- Coordinating an extensive, multiple technology patent alerting process to provide proactive insight and influence potential opportunities and watch outs.
- Managing utilisation of external patent search and tool providers.
- Leading the delivery of in-depth competitive assessments.
- Conducting internal training to promote patent understanding and compliance.
WHAT DO WE OFFER:
This role will give you the opportunity to drive patent strategy in a dynamic, diverse and international R&D team. You’ll have a key responsibility in our innovation projects to bring the competitive landscape and challenges to life. If you like, you can have the opportunity to stretch yourself every day in our high paced environment. This role reports to the R&D Front End Innovation Manager.
Qualifications
We’re looking for an experienced Patent Expert who can link IP to JDE’s technical context for innovation and technology projects, who takes ownership and has a drive for excellence. Someone that holds themselves accountable and doesn’t shy away from responsibility. You’ll need at least 7 years of experience and the ability to thrive in a diverse team. We’re more focused on the overall fit than a long list of requirements, but here are a few things that would be great to have:
- At least 7 years experience as a patent searcher, ideally in an R&D environment and preferably within the food and beverage industry.
- Experienced patent searcher, proficient in IP research tools (e.g. Derwent, PatSnap, Espacenet, National/Regional Patent Offices).
- A technical education or background (engineer, food scientist, etc) to be able to connect IP language into project contexts.
- A strategic mindset and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a variety of key stakeholders both internal (R&D, legal) and external, being able to simplify complex information, both written and verbal.
Let’s see if you’re the right match!
