Job Description
Job title - R&D Workshop Technician
Department - R&D UK
Reports to Workshop Lead
Location - Melksham UK
Job summary
Application of basic engineering principles, theories and techniques in developing furniture products. Will work under direct instruction and supervision. Work is reviewed to evaluate technical content.

Specific responsibilities

  • Support new development projects from conception to implementation.
  • Working with Design Consultants and interpreting conceptual material to develop innovative, well-engineered production solutions.
  • Develop parts and products to meet the appropriate International Ergonomic and Safety Standards, and Herman Miller’s internal performance requirements
  • Develop engineering specifications and documentation that clearly define product criteria, design intent, and performance requirements
  • Ensure that all documentation is prepared and supplied with all drawing changes in accordance with the Engineering Change Order (ECO) procedure.
  • Building relationships with all the operational teams to continually refine and improve the process of reducing time-to-market opportunities.
  • Commissioning of samples or prototype spend associated with assigned projects
  • Working with internal departments and outside Consultants on the resolution of engineering issues.
  • Working with vendors in development of production parts
  • Clear problem solving - identify problem, identify solution, implement solution, evaluate solution
  • Supporting the Model shop manager in prototyping and modelmaking for development work.
  • Use of all Model shop equipment to support prototyping
  • Support the Conformance Manager in internal product testing
  • Use the test lab equipment to perform testing
  • Complete test reports

Job holder requirements

  • Ideally a degree in model making or qualified machinist
  • Ideally 2 – 4 years experience in hands on workshop
  • Good communication skills in a small team and across the business
  • Self starter with good time management.
  • Ideally Basic 3D CAD skills
  • Sheet metal working fabrication skills
