The Opportunity This compliance-focused role within the North Tropical Coast Management Unit of the Great Barrier Reef and Marine Parks Region has a responsibility for planning, delivering, and reporting on day-to-day and longer-term Compliance Operations across National Park islands and Marine waters of the Northern Great Barrier Reef. This is a diverse and challenging role, where each day is different to the last. You will work closely with the Reef Authority, Traditional Owner Partners, partner Government Agencies, and other stakeholder groups.

Work at this level is often undertaken autonomously or under limited direction, and will require interpretation and practical implementation of strategic plans and priorities. As such, a history of working under the guidance of policies and procedures is important to us. Employees at this level require a sound knowledge of the agency’s function and our Human resource standards and expectations.
Although this role is primarily focused on delivery of compliance activities, Rangers are required to work across a broad range of functions, including fire operations; pest eradication; infrastructure maintenance; and visitor engagement. This position may at times be responsible for larger work groups or functions, field groups or project operation al delivery. In particular, the ideal applicant for this position should be able to work respectfully alongside our Traditional Owner partners, often on their sea country and working within their cultural protocols.
Whilst this position is based in Townsville, working within the North Tropical Coast GBR requires regular and extended travel to other locations. This position will be required to participate in field trips, onboard a modern and fit for purpose vessel fleet, which may total to an estimated 50 or more nights at sea per year, away from the home base. These nights at sea occur over 6 - 8 extended trips per year working within the GBR&MP. Additionally, travel to other locations to undertake works other than large vessel-based operations will be required as operationally necessary. Good physical health is a requirement of the position as it is also hands on in delivering the units work requirements. Field work including exposure to the sun (UV), hot / humid tropical temperatures, fire and smoke, registered chemicals and poisons, long hours of work (including weekend and night work), in remote areas, can be expected.
You’ll need: - Resilience, pragmatism, tenacity and confidence in a regional or remote setting- A desire to undertake surveillance and compliance operations, including face-to-face engagement with noncompliant persons- To work well within a team, and communicate effectively with your peers and members of the public- The ability to form trusted relationships with First Nations partners and various other stakeholder groups- Sound negotiation and conflict management skills- A sound understanding of conservation and natural resource management, marine operations and workplace health and safety (both physical andpsychological)- Good administration and computer skills.
