For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has been providing quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, and currently offers 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness. Our Clinics are community-based which offer a professional and welcoming environment for both clients and staff. The Clinics provide psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological therapy, as well as individual, group, family therapy, crisis intervention, medication management, case management and collateral sessions. Our staff members follow an approach to health care that emphasizes wellness, recovery, trauma-informed care, and physical-behavioral health integration.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Provisional New York State Peer Specialist Certification from the New York Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) required or Peer Advocate Certification (CPRA) preferred
  • Current or former client of a substance use program.
  • History of substance use and at least one year of recovery.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Knowledge of computer programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook).
  • Good communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work with people with behavioral disabilities.
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a recovery agent by providing and advocating for any effective recovery-based services that will aid clients in their in daily living
  • Works with individuals engaging in substance misuse to articulate personal goals for recovery through the use of one ¬to-one and group sessions
  • Draws from one’s own lived experience with substance use in order to provide structured non-clinical support services and support hope for recovery among individuals served
  • Identifies behaviors that might indicate difficulty adapting or responding to treatment (e.g., missed assessment appointments, failure to attend or maintain abstinence, risk to self or others, disruptive behavior), completes appropriate documentation, and reports concerns to the multidisciplinary treatment team in a timely manner
  • Uses ongoing individual and group sessions to teach individuals engaging in substance misuse how to identify and combat negative self-talk and how to identify and overcome fears by providing a forum which allows group members to share their experiences
  • Raises awareness of existing social and other support services, including community and mutual supports and how to use these in the recovery process. Community resources may include but are not limited to consumer¬ run self-help and mutual support services, social security office, Department of Family and Children services, local YMCA, library, restaurants, apartment complexes, and other types of housing, etc.
  • Participates in conducting relevant assessments, and contacts clients not responding to outreach. In addition, where appropriate, assists clients with securing resources and other supports necessary for maintaining the highest degree of independence and self-reliance in the community
  • Participates in the assessment and referrals to obtain the goals of the client/family including their basic needs such as food, clothing, medical care, and shelter
  • Escorts clients to medical or entitlement programs
  • Encourages all clients to participate fully in into program activities in order to help them achieve their personalized recovery goal
