Description:

THE JOB SUMMARY:

The Recreation Therapy Assistant (RTA) is an integral member of the health centre team. The RTA works in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to provide patient-centred care to hospital patients. Primary functions include providing recreation programs, encourage and support Patients to participate in recreation programs and 1:1 engagement for patients.

ACCOUNTABILITIES & SUCCESS CRITERIA:

  • Key Contributes to the organizations efforts and initiatives to enhance SJHCG’s missions, vision and values.
  • Performs duties in a manner that demonstrates the employee’s commitment to developing a culture of patient and staff safety through accountability, reliability, respect, trust and teamwork.
  • Performs duties in accordance with all applicable legislative requirements (i.e. Ministry of Labour, Public Hospitals Act, etc.).
  • Works in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies, and contraventions of the Act in a timely manner, taking action to address any items including enforcement and monitoring of compliance by the staff they supervise.


    • In collaboration with Recreation Therapist:



      • Plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic recreation individual and group programs



        • Develop new programs to meet the changing needs of patients



          • Develop and evaluate goal-oriented programs and services for patients which support quality of life



            • Deliver programs and activities to meet the patient’s physical, social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual needs

            • Responsible for assisting the Recreation Therapist with purchases related to involvement in Recreation programs and services.
            • Responsible for preparation and clean-up of program work areas, maintaining a safe and clean environment for programs and department spaces.
            • Facilitate group and individual Recreation programs ensuring the safety and wellbeing of patients participating in the program.
            • Ensure equitable access to Recreation Therapy programming for all Patients, providing encouragement and motivation for patients to participate in activities that fit the patient’s interests and goals.
            • Implement individual patient interventions related to responsive behaviours in coordination with the multidisciplinary team.
            • Facilitate therapeutic interventions that acknowledge the patient’s needs related to individual and cultural diversity.
            • Promote and communicate information about activities to patients and families.
            • Ensure activities are carried out in a manner to reduce risk of injury to patient(s) and staff.
            • Monitor behaviour and condition of patient(s) during programs and activities, ensure primary nurse or Team Leader is informed of all changes immediately.


              • Verbally communicate clearly, promptly, effectively and respectfully with all Patients, SDMs, stakeholders and employees of the organization.



                • Complete annual and quarterly MDS-RAI documentation.



                  • Review and update patient care plans ensuring Recreation interventions are accurate and beneficial to the patient.



                    • Contribute to the development and completion of the monthly activity calendars and ensure posted to units.



                      • Develop and maintain therapeutic relationship with patients.



                        • Develop and maintain a relationship with POA/SDM to provide information and support as needed for patient involvement in recreation programs.



                          • Document all pertinent patient interactions in a thorough and timely manner according to organizational policy and procedure ensuring all documentation is accurate and complete.



                            • Maintain a spirit of co-operation with other departments and multi-disciplinary team to ensure patient-centred care.

                            • Actively participate and collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team in conferences and team meetings.

                            QUALIFICATIONS:

                            • Postsecondary diploma, degree or certificate in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology, gerontology from an Ontario postsecondary institution or other related field from a community college, university or diploma, degree or certificate granted from another jurisdiction or equivalent experience is preferred
                            • Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) preferred

                            SKILLS & ABILITIES:

                            • Experience in Hospital or Long Term Care would be an asset
                            • Experience using Point Click Care would be an asset
                            • Able to work effectively and efficiently and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
                            • Strong written and verbal communication and diplomacy skills are required to manage a fast-paced work environment, and deal effectively and professionally with individuals across SJHCG (i.e. physicians, allied health, external providers, visitors and families)
                            • Demonstrate strong independent judgement and a high degree of interpersonal effectiveness to be able to deal with stakeholders across various levels internally and externally
                            • Able to manage efficiently in a multi-tasked environment and ensure deadlines are met by prioritizing workflow
                            • Demonstrated discretion and confidence dealing with highly sensitive matters
                            • Adaptable and flexible to changing workplace demands to meet organizations requirements
                              Rate of Pay: $27.03-$27.68
                              Hours of Work: Approximately five (5) hours per week
