Do you want to make a difference to the lives of refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants? You could help them to draw on their own strengths to cope with crisis and to rebuild their lives. The British Red Cross is a volunteer led organisation and the UK’s largest independent provider of services and support for refugees and people seeking asylum. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help support refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to adjust to life in a new country. This could be giving advice on how to access services, providing emotional support, helping with our group work, or giving emergency support at our drop-in centres. We are looking for volunteers who; - Can volunteer on a regular weekly basis. - Will be available to volunteer Tuesdays or Thursdays, 10am to 2pm. - Can be flexible to occasionally help with other project activities during service operating hours, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. - Can commit to volunteering for a minimum of 9 months. - Have IT skills. - Have experience in delivering sessions and activities to groups. - Can speak a second language (Arabic, Kurdish Sorani, Farsi) would be preferable but is not essential. - First aid trained is preferable but not essential. The Project Volunteer will support the Establishing Oneself project in the Refugee Support team. The project supports refugees and asylum seekers in the South Yorkshire area and helps them to integrate into UK society, and provides people with key information, as well as offering wellbeing activities and events. The project is fresh off the ground, so we are looking for a volunteer that is looking for an opportunity to get stuck into a project from its very beginning. The successful volunteer will be enthusiastic about helping to develop activities and resources that support refugees and asylum seekers in their journey to settling into the UK. Typical tasks in the role will involve: - Supporting the Project Coordinator with planning of project activities. - Supporting with occasional administrative tasks e.g. printing, preparing materials for project activities. - Developing a good understanding of the Establishing Oneself project as it develops and grows. - Creating signposting resources for refugees and asylum seekers e.g. leaflets, posters, both physical and virtual. - Flexibility when supporting with delivery of project activities at the British Red Cross office in Sheffield and in the wider community in and around Sheffield. We would be particularly interested to hear from you if you are (or have been) an asylum seeker or refugee. Diversity is something we celebrate. Skills: Strong communication skills and empathetic about the situation and needs of refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants
Able to volunteer in a multicultural environment
Good teamwork skills and a willingness to support where needed
Speak English; knowledge of another language would be helpful (particularly one used in the current local refugee population)
Emotionally resilient as you may need to deal with challenging or difficult situations
