Description:
Reporting to the Program Manager – Mental Health Services, the Regulated Behaviour Analyst (RBA) is an integral member of the inter-professional healthcare team, providing compassionate and evidence-based behaviour analytic assessment and treatment to patients in both individual and group formats. The RBA is responsible for the planning, implementation, evaluation, and supervision of behaviour analytic treatment programs for patients, with support from the Behavioural Science Technologists (BST). The RBA is responsible for clinical supervision of the behaviour analytic work of the BSTs.
The RBA is expected to work collaboratively as part of the inter-professional healthcare team to ensure consistent implementation of behaviour analytic treatment programs, providing training and oversight, as necessary.
Within this role, the employee is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre strategy. As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting patient and family centered engagement and care in all we do.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in Applied Behaviour Analysis (or equivalent) is required.
- Registration in good standing with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario is required.
- Minimum 2 years of experience delivering behaviour analytic services as an autonomously practicing behaviour analyst, preferably within a mental healthcare setting.
- Demonstrated competency in executing and overseeing behaviour analytic assessment and treatment across domains (e.g., communication, emotional regulation, social, adaptive, leisure/play, vocational, challenging behaviour), including conducting functional behavioural assessments and functional analyses, both 1:1 and in group formats, preferably within a mental healthcare setting.
- Experience working with individuals, preferably children and youth, with a wide variety of diagnoses/conditions (e.g., mental health conditions, autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, high risk behaviour, and/or dual diagnosis).
- Experience providing services to individuals, preferably children and youth, with varying abilities who engage in severe interfering behaviours (e.g., aggression, self-injury, property destruction).
- Capable of establishing and maintaining effective therapeutic relationships with a variety of patient presentations, including acute and complex needs, maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity to the needs of clients and their support network.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping children and youth succeed.
- Demonstrated excellent observation and data collection skills.
- Previous experience providing clinical supervision, training, mentoring, and coaching.
- Ability to abide by Code of Ethics as indicated by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts.
- Commitment to maintain client confidentiality and adhere to Provincial legislation (e.g.: PHIPA, Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Quality Assurance Measures, etc.).
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, including working effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
- Proven ability to organize and establish priorities in a self-directed manner.
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Current First Aid/CPR Level “C”.
- Current police check for the vulnerable sector.
- Available to rotate on day shifts and evening shifts, as clinically necessary.
- Proven good attendance record.
- Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload, responding to medical and behavioural emergencies, ability to lift using appropriate lifting techniques and bend, push and pull using good body mechanics.
- Demonstrated computer competence and familiarity with Microsoft Office software.
- Demonstrated commitment to the vision and values of the organization.
- Proven ability to attend work regularly.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience providing caregiver coaching in individual and/or group formats.
- Experience working as a professional within a clinical interdisciplinary team.
- Experience working with children, youth, and their families.
- Familiarity with community based and regional mental health and developmental services resources.
- Demonstrated knowledge of mental health medical terminology.
- Knowledge of Ontario Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Powers of Attorney Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities Act, and other relevant legislation.
- Knowledge of DSM-V TR diagnostic criteria for typical psychopharmacological treatments.
- Knowledge of principles and goals of mental health reform within Ontario.
- Current Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training or equivalent.
- French language proficiency, written and/or oral.

The RBA participates within the Behaviour Analyst’s scope of competency and practice, in the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and supervision of individual patient treatment plans and care environment:
- Contributes to a positive, engaging, and nurturing environment for patients.
- Maintains a therapeutic, safe, and secure environment, including monitoring access to secure areas.
- Participates in the treatment planning process with parents/caregivers and the interdisciplinary team, including the identification and development of patient goals.
- Conducts and oversees behaviour analytic assessments (e.g., skill-based assessments, curriculum assessments, functional behavioural behavioural assessments), including interpreting and summarizing the results.
- Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to develop and adjust individualized treatment plans that incorporate skill-acquisition and behaviour management components, based on data and observations.
- Develops, reviews, and approves behaviour analytic treatment plans and protocols, and is responsible for ongoing monitoring of the design and delivery of plans/protocols.
- Supervises the preparation of teaching materials that align with the treatment plan.
- Supervises the execution behaviour analytic treatment plans for patients in 1:1 and group formats that support patients in learning supporting skills across domains (e.g., communication, emotional regulation, social, adaptive, leisure/play, vocational, challenging behaviour).
- Provides direct and indirect , synchronous clinical supervision to BSTs working in 1:1 and group settings with patients, including modeling execution of behaviour analytic skills and strategies and providing feedback.
- Conducts Treatment Integrity Checks to ensure consistent and accurate implementation of behaviour analytic treatment programs and components, providing implementation support, training, and/or oversight, as necessary.
- Prevents and manages the emergence of challenging behaviour according to Mental Health Program guidelines and individualized care plans, consistent with the Workplace Violence Prevention training program. Debriefs with the interprofessional team and develops or revises individualized care plans accordingly.
- Uses the principles of behaviour analysis and incidental teaching strategies to support the success of patients across the day (e.g., reinforcement, functions of behaviour, motivating operations).
- Reviews data, graphs, summaries, and reports to make data-driven changes to treatment plans.
- Develops, implements, and supervises implementation of caregiver training/education in group and/or individual formats using Behavioural Skills Training (BST) to model techniques and strategies caregivers can use in the home and community to support the patient’s generalization of skills.
- Remains current on clinical best-practices and evidence-based interventions in behaviour analysis.
- Seeks consultation from internal and external professionals, as required by patient need.
- Completes documentation in a timely manner that is clear, professional, objective, and accurate.
- Maintains open communication with parents/caregivers and the interdisciplinary team.
- Collaborates with community service providers to facilitate a seamless transition.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with families, colleagues, partner agencies, volunteers, and the community.
- Participates in case consultation with family members, referring and aftercare providers, and may serve as liaison between an academic institution, the family, and identified community resource(s) when therapeutic, academic, and/or social services are provided.
- Directs and/or accompanies patients and visitors to safety in emergencies including both internal and external emergencies.
- Responds in the event of a medical emergency, under the supervision of the Care Team and as assigned.
- Attends staff meetings and change of shift meetings to obtain progress reports and relay case specific instructions.
- Provides clinical supervision to clinicians seeking regulation as a behaviour analyst, as part of regular staff supervision and professional development.
- Offers coaching, mentoring, and clinical consultation to other KHSC employees, as requested.
- Participates in peer review process, as appropriate.
- Clinically accountable for the development, execution, and evaluation of unit processes and procedures relevant to behaviour analytic treatment.
