About us
The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.
The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.
The QFD is an organisation that is focused on reframing the department’s relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and organisations through the Path to Treaty, Closing the Gap and building our cultural capability.
Purpose of the role
QFD is committed to creating and sustaining a safe and resilient Queensland in the face of fires, emergencies, and disasters. The Regional Community Engagement Coordinator will provide advice and support to all regional QFD services in the delivery of Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery (PPRR) through targeted community engagement initiatives.
As the Regional Community Engagement Coordination, you will contribute to the resilience of local communities and agencies through coordination of proactive and responsive engagement strategies and evaluation of relevant programs. You will also facilitate targeted engagement across diverse stakeholders and community groups using a range of communication methods, in line with the departments Strategic Plan, legislation and policy guidelines.
Key requirements

Highly desirable requirements

  • Minimum C Class Driver’s Licence (non restricted).
  • Qualifications in project management, communications, community engagement or equivalent discipline and/or can obtain the skill within a mutually agreed timeframe will be considered highly desirable.
  • Experience and/or understanding of working with volunteer groups and partner agencies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of IAP2 spectrum of public participation.

Special requirements

  • The hours of duty applicable to this role are pursuant to the Queensland Public Service Officers and Other Employees Award - State 2015, Schedule 1 - Section 4: specifically, the spread of ordinary hours for this role are 0600 to 2200, Monday to Sunday (S1.4.1.2).
  • Participate in an out-of-hours on-call roster during emergency operations which may require work outside of normal hours (eg. night shift), including weekend, working extended hours and intrastate deployment including travel to rural and remote locations.

Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

  • Support the development and delivery of departmental based initiatives to develop, deliver and implement targeted community engagement.
  • Engage with stakeholders from local government, other government agencies, authorities, diverse communities, and community groups to develop targeted strategies in order to enhance community resilience across PPRR from events and disasters.
  • Assist responsible officers to profile local communities and develop sustainable engagement strategies to align with identified local risk, including the development of strategic regional engagement plans to meet organisational objectives.
  • Plan, coordinate and deliver targeted events to support regional priorities and contribute to enhancing connected and capable communities.
  • Provide practical advice to internal stakeholders on departmental programs and campaigns to support place-based delivery within the region, ensuring approaches are aligned with state and regional priorities,
  • Identify opportunities to enhance community awareness and promotion of departmental priorities and initiatives including safety and awareness messaging throughout the region.
  • Empower staff and volunteers in community engagement activities through ongoing support and resourcing to ensure messaging is consistent, targeted and appropriate to achieve positive outcome.
  • Contribute to the development and ongoing implementation of evaluation strategies that test the effectiveness of community awareness programs and initiatives.
