Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Regional Director, Risk Management to join the team.
In accordance with the Vision, Values, and strategic direction of Vancouver Coastal Health, patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve the care we deliver is inherent in all aspects of this position. This leadership position focuses on ways to mitigate risk to the organization and the clients we serve.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Risk Management, ReAct Adult Protection, PCQO, Policy Office, the Regional Director, Risk Management is responsible and accountable for the organization’s risk management program and initiatives in a manner that fulfills the mission and strategic goals of Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), while complying with provincial and federal laws and accreditation standards related to risk management across VCH.
The Regional Director will design, implement, and communicate health authority-wide planning, maintenance and evaluation of frameworks and standards for the ongoing functioning of the Programs that report up to this position. In partnership with VCH Legal Services, the role will develop systems to support complying with all applicable provincial and federal laws and accreditation standards related to risk management.
This role leads and supervises the Risk Management program across all the Communities of Care of VCH. The Regional Director provides senior leadership and strategic direction in providing the best possible proactive response to risk to the organization while supporting safe patient care for our patients, clients, and families.
The Regional Director will collaborate with the Executive Director, as well as the Regional Directors for Quality & Patient Safety, Experience in Care, People Safety, and Data Analytics and other colleagues across the industry to support overall consistency of systems, processes and outcomes. The Regional Director will closely partner with the Medical Affairs/Medicine portfolio and VCH Legal Services. Represents VCH in dealing with internal and external legal counsel, insurers and other external agencies in investigating and managing claims involving patients/clients, and identifying and resolving other risk management issues. The Regional Director is involved with various health sector and ministry/government committees and initiatives, locally, provincially, and nationally to ensure VCH’s alignment with current directions, research and practice.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Juris Doctor or a Master’s Degree in Health Administration or related discipline, plus seven to ten (7 to 10) years’ recent, related experience in progressively senior leadership roles with responsibility for leading risk management activities including coordinating teams in complex environments, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES

  • Sound interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Superior writing and verbal communication abilities, and independent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Strong communication, team development and change management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally on behalf of VCH with various levels of leadership and stakeholders, both internally and externally to the organization.
  • Effectively and proactively coordinates strategies, systems, and processes to reduce risk, minimize and manage client complaints and claims, and collaborates with others to support safe patient care for VCH.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Expertly applies technical and analytical expertise to assess and support risk and situation management activities, and to establish and implement risk management and quality improvement strategies to support the organization.
  • Oversees, assists with, and/or conducts timely risk assessments in response to requests and consults with leadership to mitigate any identified risk impacting VCH.
  • Applies superior judgment and political expertise to communicate sensitive information, and effectively persuade and negotiate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Expertly interprets and implements regulatory obligations and responsibilities of VCH in the context of relevant legislation and regulations and other changing standards.
  • Self-directed with effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
