Manitoba Wildfire Service is seeking highly motivated, qualified individuals to fill the positions of Regional Fire Technician in our Lac Du Bonnet and The Pas offices.

Remoteness Allowance: Employees in The Pas are eligible for Remoteness Allowance (subject to the eligibility criteria and conditions).
Qualification Pay: Resource Technicians shall be granted, in addition to their normal salary, a premium of two dollars ($2.00)/hour for actual hours worked while actively engaged in wildfire suppression as authorized by the Employer.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a full-stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s licence (or equivalent)
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the Province of Manitoba, as required including overnight stays in remote field camps
  • Must be willing and able to work evenings, weekends and overtime as required
  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position such as flying frequently in a wide variety of small aircrafts and working in adverse weather conditions

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Graduation from a Resource Management program. An equivalent combination of related education, training and experience in wildfire suppression may be considered.
  • Extensive experience and understanding of wildfire fire suppression techniques, equipment, and fire-fighting aircraft.
  • Knowledge and understanding of wildfire behaviour.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills including the ability to meet strict timelines.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills, including the ability to coach, train, motivate and performance manage staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving skills including the ability to make effective decisions under stressful conditions.
  • Strong verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel and Outlook) or similar software applications.
  • Experience delivering training programs and materials.

Desired:

  • Experience developing training programs and materials.

Duties:
The Regional Fire Technician provides technical expertise and assistance to regional and district field service staff in the planning and delivery of the region’s forest fire management programs. Reporting to the Fire Operations Manager, the Regional Fire Technician is a supervisory position responsible for the daily supervision of the Regional Fire Cache and Regional Fire Ranger staff.
Additional responsibilities include: monitors staff training certification levels and certification currency and co-ordinating re-certification and training courses as required; ensures the quality of the regional Initial Attack Crew, Fire Ranger, and Emergency Fire Fighter (EFF) programs; assists in the development and instruction of regional and provincial fire training programs; responsible for the regional fire management inventory system; researches and develops new fire equipment and suppression techniques providing full reports and demonstrations; assists with selection and recruitment of staff; and represents the region on Provincial Working Groups and Task Teams as assigned. The Regional Fire Technician will assume the role of Regional Duty Officer on a rotational and “as needed” basis, and may be required to participate in a variety of fire suppression activities throughout the regions or province as required.
