Job Description
As part of the Child, Youth & Emerging Adult Program (CYEAP), Child, Youth and Family Services (CYFS) provides care and treatment to children and youth between the ages of 6 and 24. Clients and their families served by CYFS are offered specialized services and customized care across an inpatient, day treatment, and outpatient continuum of care.
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, is currently seeking a part-time, permanent, Registered Nurse (BScN) to work in the inpatient unit serving youth with concurrent disorders. The Concurrent Youth Unit, in the Child, Youth and Family Services serves provincial youth ages 13 to 18, with potential for up to 21, with moderate to severe addiction(s) to substances and accompany mental health issues. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Child, Youth & Family Services, and as a member of an interprofessional team, you will provide client-centered psychiatric, addictions and general nursing care, including admission processes, withdrawal management, client assessments, care plan development, care implementation, medication and treatment administration, and family support. You will contribute to activities such as unit/program development, support of unit and CAMH processes, and will support the program’s evaluation and research activities. Your role will include supporting evidence-based models of care and programming, such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Your skills include the ability to make behavioral observations, conduct mental status assessments, monitor patient’s response to pharmaceutical and other therapy interventions, and provide quality clinical documentation, and ongoing effective communication within the team. You will have sound knowledge of crisis prevention and intervention, mental health and addiction issues, harm-reduction, child development, trauma-informed care, recovery, and family-informed care. Your strengths include an ability to perform thorough assessments, develop, implement and evaluate inter-professional client centered care plans, support clients in establishing and working toward attaining their goals, and participate effectively in inter-professional collaboration and effective teamwork. You will value and engage in self-reflection and continuous learning. As a staff member at CAMH and on CYU, you behave as an ambassador; supportive of professional conduct and CAMH values. Your role includes support to clients to transition to other services. You will liaise with other services at CAMH and with community agencies, to coordinate care for clients, and will sustain positive working relationships on the unit, and with our internal and external partners. You will ensure that security, safety and the CNO standards of nursing practice are maintained. You will be able to work with adolescent clients and families from diverse populations, provide education support and supervision to students and volunteers. You will demonstrate a commitment to accountability: critical thinking, reflective practice and continuous learning. This position involves shift rotation and is located at 80 Workman Way, at the Queen Street Site.
Job Requirements
You must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario and able to practice without restrictions. You must also possess a current B.C.L.S. (CPR) certificate. You must have a bachelor degree in nursing, BScN, and preference will be given to RNs with certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing through the Canadian Nurses Association (CAN). Specialized clinical experience working with complex and challenging youth and their families is preferred. You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills enabling you to develop therapeutic nurse-patient relationships. You will be able to work within a collaborative and diverse inter-professional team. Effective leadership, decision-making, organizational and problem solving skills are required. You must have skills in working effectively in a fast-paced environment, in crisis prevention and the ability to intervene effectively in situations requiring the support and management of dysregulated behaviors. 3 years nursing experience with adolescents and with concurrent disorder, and demonstrated knowledge of best practices; evidence-based addictions and mental health treatment models are an asset. The ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary. Computer literacy is required. Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.
