POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Expert at peripheral IV insertions.
  • Ultrasound guided midline insertion preferred.
  • Ultrasound guided PICC insertion skills preferred.
  • Highly motivated and demonstrated ability to be self-directed, independent, and responsive to ever-changing environments and patient needs.
  • Highly organized, excellent team-player, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of adult teaching and learning principals and demonstrated competency to teach others.
  • Committed to quality improvement.
  • Sound knowledge and adherence to aseptic and sterile techniques with thorough knowledge of infection control protocols for patient safety.
  • Extremely knowledgeable regarding different vascular access devices and their indications for use.
  • Physically able to perform the essential duties of a VAT nurse including standing for extended periods, walking frequently, and manipulating medical equipment.
  • Canadian Vascular Access Certification is an asset.
  • Vascular Access and/or infusion therapy courses are an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Covers entire hospital for vascular access support, including rapid response.
  • Performs comprehensive patient assessments to inform vascular access needs and makes recommendations.
  • Maintains vascular access devices and troubleshoots malfunctioning catheters.
  • Administers and reads TB skin tests.
  • Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to develop plans to deliver the most appropriate IV therapy.
  • Accountable for ones decisions and professional practice.
  • Complies with all Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
