Description:
The Pediatric Allergy and Dermatology Centre, is in need of an RN to help with our expanding patient workload and growing practice. The position will be responsible for supporting an allergist within the group. The optimal candidate is a highly motivated healthcare professional who is passionate about pediatrics and the provision of exceptional patient care.
Our Oral Immunotherapy (OIT)program is growing and we need someone who can oversee and manage the OIT program operation in the clinical setting with the supervising allergist. The nurse will be responsible for Allergy Testing, Oral Food Challenges (OFC) and Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) protocols.
- Partners with an allergist to develop, implement, and evaluate an OIT program and protocols
- Clinical competence with assessment, management, and healthcare coordination of patients undergoing Allergy testing, OFCs, OITs and/or patients participating in Clinical Research trials.
- Effectively coordinates pre-OFC and OIT work up, educates patient/family regarding OFCs and OITs and schedules patients/families in for their OIT protocols.
- Assesses patient and/or family knowledge of food allergy and OIT process; provides needs-based education and evaluates understanding
- Assesses patient and/or family understanding of food allergy, anaphylaxis, and OIT; provides educational review, reinforcement as needed, and evaluates retention
- Monitors patient progress with regular physical, emotional, and mental health assessments during OFCs and OITs and during home protocols as necessary
- Alerts the allergist of adverse reactions and treats as needed per prescribed OFC and OIT protocols
- Plans and educates about OIT maintenance and follow-up protocols
- Performs administrative responsibilities when required (e.g. quality assurance and/or quality improvement)
- Develops, implements, and evaluates education materials for allergy patients
- Coordinates group classes for patients in OIT and families for ongoing education and peer support opportunity
- Maintain accurate patient medical records. Monitor and report changes in patient symptoms or behaviour.
- Monitors emails and responds to parent’s emails regarding OIT questions and concerns
- Monitors and maintains emergency cart with supplies.
- Schedules and facilitates emergency mock codes.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and in good standing with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Current Criminal Record Check
- At least two (2) years of recent clinical nursing experience preferably working with the pediatric population in an ambulatory care or community health service setting, including experience in developing and delivering educational programs for staff, patients and their families with an emphasis on allergy management or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Valid BCLS Certification mandatory. ACLS preferred
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
- Ability to work well with the pediatric population and their families
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrate innovative, analytical abilities, leadership skills, and exceptional communication skills to deliver excellent patient care.
- Strong administrative/computer skills/emails
- Experience working with EMR systems
- Competency with computers and videoconferencing (Outlook, Word, Excel, Zoom)
