Nursing is a self-regulated profession governed through the College. A nurse is responsible for practicing in accordance with the standards of the profession, and for keeping current and competent throughout his/her nursing career (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Completion of additional college equivalent courses required to deliver care at the full-scope of RPN practice as established by the College of Nurses of Ontario required. (This includes, but is not limited to, the administration of blood and blood products, advanced wound care, administration of medications including processing physician’s orders and initiation, medication reconciliation, phlebotomy and management of peripheral intravenous therapy)
  • Successful completion of a PeriAnaesthesia Nursing course preferred

SKILL, ABILITY AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 2 years of recent Surgical Nursing experience, which includes the provision of pre and/or post-operative surgical care required.
  • Demonstrated experience providing education to patients and families.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficient in the use of computers and with electronic nursing documentation required
  • Experience caring for pediatric surgical patients preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Provides nursing care and teaching to Pre-Admission and Day Surgery patients as required
  • Participates in unit/department and Hospital Quality Improvement initiatives
  • Completes continuing education requirements as necessary
  • Acts as a coach, mentor, resource and positive role model for new staff and students
  • Other related duties as assigned
