Job Description
The Brain Health Imaging Centre (BHIC) is one of the primary research areas of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and focuses on brain imaging methods used in mental health and addictions for clinical neuroscience research. The BHIC is a teaching centre of excellence, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. The Positron Emitting Tomography (PET) Imaging Program in the BHIC is currently seeking one full-time, contract Technologist (Radiochemistry). Reporting to the Manager of Radiochemistry Research & Production, under the oversight of the Director & Chief Radiochemist, you will operate the cyclotron for the production of positron emitting radionuclides, both for clinical research and basic research studies. Under the supervision of a manager, you will perform routine radiochemical syntheses of positron emitting radiopharmaceuticals (PERs) for administration to human subjects, preclinical imaging or in vitro studies. You will perform quality control of radioligands for PET studies including chemical and radiochemical purity, pH, sterility and pyrogenicity, as well as radiometabolite analyses. You will ensure that the production of all PERs for human use are performed in accordance to the relevant GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and standard operating procedures set by the Centre, and in accordance to the relevant Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and Health Canada regulations. You will maintain radiochemistry databases (production records, inventories, patient records) as well as other records that may be required by regulatory agencies. You will ensure the smooth and efficient running of the radiochemistry laboratory on a day-to-day basis including: maintaining an adequate supply of the solvents, reagents, chemicals, consumables, clean glassware, and other items which are required for normal operations, and will include becoming proficient at aseptic processing. You will assist in radiochemistry research into the development of new radiotracers, or into new methods of production of established radiotracers, and assist in the operation, maintenance, and first line response for repair of the cyclotron, automated radiosynthesis units, radiometabolite apparatus, HPLC, GC, other analytical and laboratory equipment. This will also include rotational cleaning of hot cells, radiochemistry equipment, aseptic areas, as well as cleanroom suites, and will complete all other duties assigned. You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements. This position is located at 250 College Street.
Job Requirements
The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related science and have experience with analytical methods and equipment such as HPLC, GC, and TLC. Working in a GMP and/or PET radiochemistry environment is considered an asset. You will be detail-oriented with demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to produce high quality and accurate work while meeting programmed deadlines and requirements. Good interpersonal communication (oral/written) skills are required along with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members in a multi-disciplinary team and flexible working environment.
