Job Summary

As a Relay Technician, you will perform maintenance tests and maintain relays and other circuit protective devices and instruments. This highly technical role will commission and maintain testing of electromechanical solid-state, and microprocessor-based protective relays.
This position has a potential to be headquartered out of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin Rapids, Fond du Lac, Madison, Windsor, or Portage, Wisconsin.

What you will do

  • Using the latest testing methodology, verify protection and control schemes operate as intended by engineering. Corrects issues as needed.
  • Performs commissioning and maintenance testing of electromechanical, solid state and microprocessor based protective relays. Works with engineering to resolve setting issues.
  • Performs commissioning and maintenance testing of protective relay communication systems including Power line carrier, tone and fiber.
  • Troubleshoot protective equipment and schemes if an undesirable operation occurs; Make necessary corrections.
  • Assist Electricians during complex or “high visibility” wiring additions and removals.
  • Verifies CT and PT circuits are correct and ready to be placed into service.
  • Terminates and makes loss measurements of substation fiber optic cables.
  • Verifies that secondary voltage and current circuits are correct when placing equipment into service. “In service checks”
  • Assists the Electrical Technicians with the verification of alarms, controls and metering.
  • Documents test results and assists with associated records.
  • Records electrical drawing changes and submits “field revision” drawings to engineering.
  • Performs other duties which are similar, related or incidental to this position.

Education Requirements

  • Education or a combination of training and experience equivalent to two years’ study in an engineering college.

Required Experience

  • 4 years technical experience in plant and substation electrical work

Other Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven basic knowledge of electrical theory and work practices.
  • Proven ability to interpret AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to operate test equipment; Power system simulator, CT test set, Phase angle meter, megohmmeter and various multimeters.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a computer and associated software; Windows, Excel, Word, etc.
  • Experience with computer programming, database management and Cascade is a plus.
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Demonstrated mechanical ability.
  • Ability to work alone in unsupervised situations.
  • Ability to plan own work with an emphasis on applying human performance tools.
  • Proven resourcefulness to handle unusual technical situations.
