JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Religious Education Assistant Status: Part Time
Exemption Status: Non-exempt
Department/Location: Our Mother of Sorrows Parish 1800 S. Kolb Rd, Tucson, AZ 85710
Primary Function: Under the direction of the Director of Religious Education is responsible for assisting and supporting the Director of Religious Education. The Assistant is to be a role model and support the Diocese of Tucson in its mission to evangelize, catechize, and educate youth in a Religious Education environment. The Assistant shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A working knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the mission of fostering lay leadership in the Catholic Church. If a baptized Catholic, must be a practicing Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Must have a working knowledge of and commitment to all the Religious Education programs at Our Mother of Sorrows for children 4 years old through high school.
  • General computer skills including internet research.
  • Excellent communications skills including written and verbal.
  • Must be able to resolve conflicts when they arise.
  • Professional bearing and clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Must be a self-starter, be well-organized, flexible, and be a team player.
  • Always maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Director of Religious Education, catechists, and parish staff.
  • Weekend work will be required, and evening work may be required.
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously and with a sense of urgency.
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, parents, and others
  • Be able to successfully complete a criminal history and background check.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A working knowledge of Religious Education programs

Responsibilities:

  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the Religious Education program by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The assistant may not espouse, in word or deed, any doctrine inconsistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Give evidence of living Gospel values by being an active member of a faith community and being open to the importance of a personal faith journey; strive to model the teaching of Jesus by attitude and example.
  • Responsible for overseeing the Religious Education program or activities when the Director of Religious Education is unavailable.
  • Assist with Religious Education open registration in August.
  • Help with mailings as needed.
  • Assign students to appropriate Religious Education programs as needed.
  • Help purchase materials and supplies, while working within the Religious Education budget.
  • Make supply boxes for Religious Education catechists.
  • Unlock the doors for the Sunday Religious Education program.
  • Help set up for sacrament gatherings; Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
  • Make copies for both the English and Spanish Bilingual programs.
  • Assist with the set-up of Catechist gatherings.
  • Assist with the set-up, program, and clean up for the Christmas programs and May Crowning Celebration.
  • Assist with all sacrament celebrations.
  • Keep the Director of Religious Education informed of any problems that arise.
  • Work cooperatively with the administration and all staff members; promote positive relationships with students, parents, and others.
  • Maintain a professional manner and demonstrate a sense of professional responsibility.
  • Adhere to the Diocese of Tucson Safe Environment program and guidelines regarding appropriate boundaries and compliance with current mandatory reporting law.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required as part of the program activities.
    Required Activities: Walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, hearing, carrying, and keyboarding.
