Description:
The UCLA Chemistry & Biochemistry Department has a tradition of excellence and is ranked among the best in the country, as evidenced by the quality of its programs, the caliber of its faculty, and the excellence of its students. The Department is a leader in cutting-edge research and innovative educational programs. The Department employs over 50 professors pursuing research in all areas of chemistry and biochemistry. The goals of this research include synthesizing complex natural products and new nano-materials required to solve the many health and environmental crises facing our planet, and illuminating the molecular mechanisms that regulate the decoding of genetic information.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated skill in Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry, Gas Chromatography, Supercritical Fluid Chromatography, and Infrared Spectroscopy (Required)
- Broad knowledge with hands-on experience in laboratory instrumentation. Technical and scientific ability for operation, instruction, routine maintenance and minor repair. (Required)
- Demonstrated broad knowledge of research and development in chemical analysis to support a diverse array of research and instrumentation. (Required)
- Commitment to the implementation and utilization of modern instrumentation into undergraduate and graduate instruction. (Required)
- Ability to teach experimental details to researchers with a broad range of scientific backgrounds. (Required)
- Skill in prioritizing tasks in an environment where a large variety of research is conducted using shared equipment. (Required)
- Demonstrated skill in troubleshooting hardware and software problems encountered with instrumentation, and ability to work simultaneously and productively on several projects. (Required)
- Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with graduate and undergraduate students, staff, faculty, and visitors. (Required)
- Excellent verbal skills and ability to speak either on a one-to-one basis or in a group using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and clearly convey information, and explain complex scientific and technical issues. (Required)
- Excellent skill in writing concise, logical, grammatically correct documents, e.g. instruction manuals, descriptions of the facilities and technical capabilities of the equipment. (Required)
- Knowledge of safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals and safe laboratory practices. Knowledge of current state, federal, OSHA and UCLA regulations as they apply to the laboratories. (Required)
- Ability to work independently or as a team, follow through on assignments with minimal direction and identify potentially better methods of operation. (Required)
EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & PERSONAL AFFILIATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree B.S. in related field of study and / or equivalent experience / training (Required) And
- 3 years of specialized design work; or an equivalent combination of experience and additional education (Required)
