Reports to: Director of Research and Development
Position Overview:
The Research and Development Technician will paly a crucial role in innovating and improving products within the food and Natural Health Products industry. This position involves developing new products, enhancing existing ones, and introducing new delivery forms to meet high standards for sensory and nutritional attributes, quality, manufacturability, cost, and timelines. The role requires active research on new ingredients, technologies, and processes, while ensuring compliance with Health Canada, CFIA, and FDA regulations.

Please find the key responsibilities of this position is as follows:

  • Develop new innovative products, improve existing products, and innovate new delivery forms to meet objectives for sensory and nutritional attributes, quality, manufacturability, cost, and timeline.
  • Actively research and recommend new ingredients, product concepts, technologies, and processes to maintain industry leadership.
  • Work closely with R&D team members, other departments, and external partners to coordinate and execute production testing and drive the commercialization of new products and processes.
  • Provide technical and troubleshooting assistance for production scale-up and pilot trials.
  • Set internal raw material specifications in compliance with Health Canada Natural Health Product labelling and GMP regulations, CFIA labelling regulations, and FDA 21 CFR 111 dietary supplement labelling regulations.
  • Create nutritional panels/supplement fact panels/product fact panels in compliance with different regulatory requirements.
  • Apply for Natural Product Number (NPN) for new product registration and amendments for existing products as required.
  • Maintain detailed, comprehensive records of formulations, process parameters, sensory assessments, and project progress.
  • Maintain a clean and organized lab environment.
  • Prioritize sustainability and environmental considerations in all business relations.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, planning, organizational, and mathematical skills.
  • Enthusiastically perform other duties as required to support the R&D team and company objectives.

An ideal candidate will meet the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Food Science, Food Technology or related discipline.
  • 2 years work experience in product development/R&D/Innovation/quality department in the food industry. Experience in Natural Health Product Industry is a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge in Health Canada Natural Health Product labelling and GMP regulations; CFIA labelling regulations; and FDA 21 CFR 111 and dietary supplement labelling regulations.
  • Aptitude for solving technical challenges through systematic research and investigation.
  • Ability to multitask, project coordinate and manage by objectives.
  • Analytical and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, planning, organizational and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly.
  • Exceptional organization, attention to detail and commitment to follow-through.
  • Self-motivated and able to work under pressure and time-sensitive conditions.
