The Department of Family Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 8 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
TARRANT Viral Watch is a surveillance program that monitors the activity of influenza and COVID-19 seen by community health care providers in Alberta. Data is collected by volunteer family physicians and COVID-19 assessment centers from all over Alberta. who act as sentinels, and report cases of respiratory illness and send specimens to the Provincial Laboratory for virologic confirmation. TARRANT compiles this information and sends it to its partner agencies to contribute to provincial & national surveillance data.
This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator.
This is a recurring part-time position working approximately 12 hours per week; however, the actual volume of work can vary depending on project needs and epidemic peaks. Recurring part-time are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Database management & analysis, including data entry, reconciling and validation
- Actively recruit new sentinel physicians
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with sentinels & stakeholders to secure continual participation and funding
- Coordinate year-round surveillance and validate data between Alberta Precision Lab, sentinels, and Alberta Health
- Prepare summary reports, annual reports, ethics reports/renewals and grant proposals
- Plan and attend the TARRANT Viral Watch Annual General Meeting
- Create poster presentations, monthly newsletters and other materials for research/educational events
- Contribute to program website content & maintenance
- Conduct research in other infectious diseases/public health issues as they arise
- Maintain established programs and procedures and make recommendations to streamline processes
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor of Science degree required, MSc Student or PhD Student in Health Sciences preferred
- Experience in management of datasets, particularly cleaning and analysis
- Knowledge of research methods, statistics, and epidemiological principles
- Healthcare background an asset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of website design & maintenance an asset
- Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to work independently and well as in a team environment
- Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities
- Strong attention to detail, accurate data entry skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
