MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of sufficient upper division courseworkOR -Equivalent of two years full time progressively responsible related experience in lieu of coursework.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Animal care experience in academic research setting or equivalent.
  • Experience in the application of written principles of sanitation and disinfection.
  • AALAS certification at ALAT level or active preparation for pursuing certification within 18 months of hire.
  • Writing skills and ability to keep accurate work records using proper English language usage, spelling and grammar.
  • Computer skills and aptitude to learn new applications.
  • Ability to work with a low level of supervision.
  • Must be detail oriented and with ability to multitask.

Responsibilities:

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES 95%

  • Perform all aspects of animal husbandry, health observations and maintenance of animal facilities to provide a full range of animal care services to animals involved in biomedical research projects.
  • Monitor animal health conditions and oversee animal breeding requirements.
  • Communicate health observations to faculty, staff and students to maintain compliance with established SOPs, policies and guidelines.
  • Assist in communication with veterinarians and OLAC staff on animal health conditions and compliance requirements.
  • Provide medical care to animals in accordance with veterinary recommendations following established SOPs and guidelines.
  • Perform humane euthanasia of animals in compliance of all applicable veterinary guidelines.
  • Maintenance of animal facility in compliance with USDA, NIH, AAALAC guidance and other applicable rules and regulations as overseen by institutional compliance committees.
  • Follow standard operating procedures for the maintenance of pathogen free animals and prevention of cross contamination of animals including demanding sanitation of facilities and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records according to standards appropriate for the animal care facility.
  • Follow written SOPs on animal facility operations and methods.
  • Operate autoclaves and cage washers and prepare all materials needed for maintenance of animal facilities.
  • Performs additional projects related to operation of animal facilities as required.
  • Interact and communicate effectively with co-workers, animal facility users, managers and faculty as needed.
  • Flexible on-site work schedule 6:00 am to 4:30 pm M-F with ability to work weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule. Teleworking is not available with this position.
