Research Assistant in Effects of War-Related Injury in Gaza

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Work towards research on Gaza-based component of the project ‘Afterlives of war-related injury’: tracing the immediate and long-term effects of injury at different scales from the individual and family to the social and economic
• Conduct remote interviews and administer online surveys with healthcare workers, the injured and their families in Gaza
• Translation and transcription of data and other materials between Arabic and English
• Conduct primary and secondary data analysis
• Be ready to work with health-related databases and review of health files
• Present and publish research via academic and policy relevant publications individually and collaboratively with colleagues
• Work both independently and collaboratively
• Contribute to collaborative ethos of Geography at Newcastle and the wider research team
• Develop personal research networks to support research activities and future career development

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Research interests and skills closely aligned with the project aim of investigating health outcomes for vulnerable patient groups, particularly injured persons
• Experience of working directly with vulnerable patient groups, particularly injured persons, and their families
• Arabic language skills (fluency in all areas)
• Prior research experience in Gaza on health-related topic(s)
• First-hand knowledge of Gaza and professional networks based in Gaza
• Experience of carrying out prior desk and field-based research and developing research ideas and methodologies
• Ability to contribute to publication of high-quality academic papers and policy reports and documents
• Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with diverse audiences, both orally and in writing

QUALIFICATIONS

• MSc or MA in public health or development or related social science discipline
• Bachelor degree in a health-related discipline

The purpose of this Research Assistant Role in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology at Newcastle University is to conduct research on the project ‘The afterlives of war-related injury: Mapping civilian trauma pathways in conflict settings’.
The project is funded through the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship scheme. Led by Dr Craig Jones, ‘The afterlives of war-related injury’ is a 4-year, interdisciplinary study into the immediate and long-term effects of physical and mental injury among civilian populations in Gaza and Iraq. The role involves desk-based research and remote methods (e.g. interviews and surveys) to produce a body of data about the effects of injury at different scales.
The post provides an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to work with leading researchers in political geography and to gain valuable experience in contributing to collaborative research.
