About the role
We are looking for an Economist to join the ESRC-funded Decision Maker Panel survey of UK businesses to work with Professor Nicholas Bloom (Stanford University), Professor Paul Mizen (Kings College London), Dr Gregory Thwaites (University of Nottingham) and the Bank of England.
The Decision Maker Panel (DMP) is a large and representative monthly survey of British businesses run by the Bank of England in collaboration with academics from, King’s College London, University of Nottingham and Stanford University. It is a key source of data for the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and has been regularly used in the Monetary Policy Report, speeches and academic publications.
We are looking for an individual with a strong academic background, with a good undergraduate degree in economics and a masters degree (or close to completion) in economics or a related discipline. The candidate may be looking to obtain a PhD. The candidate will work with the Decision Maker Panel team for up to 18 months and will have excellent economic understanding, econometrics and data handing skills and an ability to write clearly in English.
The role will involve a combination of:
contributing to all aspects of research projects using the DMP data, including data analysis, preparing presentations and contributing to research papers
matching the DMP to ONS datasets in the Secure Research Service, analysing the new insights offered by the matched datasets and using these data in research projects
Building and maintaining DSGE models to explain our results
Writing summaries of the results from each monthly survey, contributing to monthly data releases and working on blogs
Developing new ways of analysing data from the DMP
This is a part time (up to 50% fte) fixed term contract with an immediate start date (negotiable with the successful candidate) with a fixed end date of 19 March 2026.
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
1. A relevant postgraduate qualification, such as a Masters in economics or finance, or equivalent work experience
2. Experience of carrying out academic research or having demonstrated the potential to do so in future
3. A genuine interest in monetary policy issues
4. Strong analytical skills
5. Excellent oral and written communication skills
6. Attention to detail, be able to produce consistently accurate work, working independently, sometimes to tight deadlines
Desirable criteria
1. A masters degree in economics or finance
2. Practical experience of working with and/or running of business surveys
3. Ability to come up with new ways of analysing and visualising data
4. Demonstrable interest in monetary economics
5. Experience with Matlab
