We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD researcher working in the exciting field of deep learning for environmental modeling. While foundation models are very succesful in fields like natural language processing and computer vision, the research community is just starting to investigate them for environmental modeling tasks. Your goal will be to develop novel methods that allow to train foundation models on heterogeneous and multi-modal environmental data, e.g., for marine systems like the Baltic sea. These models will allow gaining a deeper understanding of dynamics of such complex ecosystems. You will work with deep learning researchers in our group, but also collaborate with leading experts in marine systems, e.g., at the Leibniz Institute of Baltic sea resarch (IOW) or the Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada.

Responsibilities:

  • research in the field of deep learning for earth systems, e.g. foundation models of marine systems with the aim of scientific qualification (doctorate)
  • develop and apply methods ranging from deep learning, transformers and physics-informed neural networks to geospatial modeling
  • collaborate with international partners, e.g. at Dalhousie University (Halifax / Canada) as well as local experts, e.g. at the Leibniz Institute of Baltic Research (IOW)
  • publish scientific papers in flagship conferences and journals
  • supervise bachelor and master students
  • organize and conduct scientific events
