At the “Friedrich List” Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, Institute of Railway Systems
and Public Transport, the Chair of Railway Operations offers, subject to the availability of
resources, a project position as
Research Assistant (m/f/x)
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)
starting at the earliest possible date. The position is initially limited until October 31, 2027. The
period of employment is governed by § 2 (2) Fixed Term Research Contracts Act
(Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). Balancing family and career is an important issue. The

In our diverse research projects in the fields of railway operation sciences and networked public
transport systems, we investigate fundamental systemic interrelationships, further develop the
theoretical procedures based on them and transfer them into solutions for traffic and operational
practice. The main focus is on the areas of performance, operational quality and operational planning
as well as the development and modelling of sustainable operational processes and technologies for
passenger and freight transport. We also contribute to the further development of the railway
operation laboratory.
Tasks: Your activities in this context will focus on the following:
- development of scientific models, methods and tools using in particular AI, optimisation and
simulation;
- development and evaluation of future-proof service offerings including digitalisation and
automation approaches for rail freight and public transport;
- transfer of theoretical findings into practice and into the railway operation laboratory;
- participation in research projects for industry partners and scientific institutions;
- evaluation, documentation and publication of research results.
REQUIREMENTS:
• successful scientific university degree (Master or Diploma) in the field of transport
engineering, railway systems engineering, civil engineering with specialisation in railway
operations, logistics, industrial engineering or comparable;
- in-depth knowledge of railway systems, public transport or rail freight transport;
- systematic and analytical way of working with clear target and deadline orientation;
- business fluent in German and very good knowledge of written and spoken English;
- organisational and coordination skills as well as good communication and teamwork skills.
