Description:

We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a Research Assistant to join the McKeating Molecular Virology group operating within the Target Discovery Institute at the Nuffield Department of Medicine as part of a collaborative research programme with Kings College Hospital, London. Our research focuses on understanding the interplay between hepatitis B and Delta virus infection and the role of hypoxia signaling in the development of liver disease.
The main responsibility of this post is to coordinate the multiplex staining of tissue samples and to analyse the data using existing pipelines. You will be responsible for staining human tissue samples for hepatitis B and Delta virus RNA and antigens along with immune markers, imaging stained tissues, and quantifying the frequency of infected cells. You will be performing laboratory tests to produce reliable data to support scientific publications keeping detailed records of all activities, interpreting results, and presenting to team members. You will contribute to general lab management (ordering and organisation of stocks). You will also be responsible for managing your own research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by senior colleagues.
To be successful in this role, you will hold a degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology, or similar, along with experience in handling cells, and tissue culture. You will have detailed knowledge of hepatitis B and delta viruses and hypoxia biology as well as a responsible nature with a methodical and careful approach to independent lab work. You will have excellent communication skills, including writing text that can be published, presenting data at conferences, and representing the research group at meetings. This role is also essential to familiarity working with high-resolution imaging, including smFISH visualisation of RNA and molecular biology techniques.
