ABOUT US

The Faculty of Health Sciences is a large, diverse, and comprehensive unit, comprised of six Schools (Nursing, Kinesiology, Health Studies, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Communication Sciences and Disorders), a large Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and four Research Centres. The Faculty has more than 3,200 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students (200 PhD students).
Western’s School of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers graduate programs in both Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and provides students with professional and research-based learning opportunities. Home to the National Centre for Audiology and the H.A. Leeper Speech and Hearing Clinic, Western is recognized around the world for its research in the areas of hearing and speech. The foundation of the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders academic programs is a talented group of researchers and instructors that combine the most recent research discoveries with clinical skills and knowledge that create an educational environment that is second to none.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • 3 year undergraduate degree in a relevant field

Experience:

  • 1 year experience supporting research implementation and related administrative activities
  • Experience working with older adults and persons with dementia would be an asset
  • Experience with cognitive assessment is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with regulations and guidelines governing research ethics in an academic environment
  • Familiarity with best practices for reviewing and writing grant proposals
  • Familiarity with methods for research design, implementation, and analysis
  • Familiarity with techniques for updating, managing and extracting data from a research database
  • Familiarity with experimental design and analysis
  • Ability to collaborate and develop credible relationships with a wide variety of individuals
  • Communication skills to describe technical concepts effectively to both novice and sophisticated users
  • Ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
  • Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
  • Ability and willingness to employ a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and making decisions
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
  • Ability and willingness to stay abreast of technological developments
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency in REDCap electronic data capture
  • Demonstrated ability take initiative, to work independently and follow through on work assignments
  • Ability to prioritize and organize a fluctuating work load
  • Ability to investigate defined issues, solicit input, and suggest remedies and alternative approaches that meet the needs of the situation
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, staff, faculty, and other members of the University community
  • Ability to interpret and identify key results from research and to succinctly summarize research findings
  • Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve research goals
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of relevant scientific/research principles
  • Intermediate skills in software and applications used to produce and analyze research outcomes

Responsibilities:

The Research Assistant will support the research and related administrative activities for the Super Aging Initiative research projects under the direction of a principal investigator and in adherence with ethics protocols and guidelines. The Research Assistant will assist researchers, staff, students and other members of the research team with a variety of day-to-day research duties to support research operations, and to facilitate the achievement of innovative research results. The Research Assistant will act as a liaison between the research team and study participants. The Research Assistant will assist with compiling and analyzing research results, and will support the knowledge translation and dissemination of research results arising from these projects. The Research Assistant will perform qualitative and quantitative data collection, entry and processing. The Research Assistant will also support the development and implementation of future research projects and may also assist with the preparation of any required documents, coordination of travel, and the organization of meetings for the research team.
