JOB SUMMARY

The Arkansas Colleges of Health Education (ACHE) Research Institute Health and Wellness Center (RIHWC) is accepting applications for research associate and animal specialist in the Abbott lab at the Center for Oncology Research. The Center for Oncology Research is part of a new expansive multidisciplinary research center with state-of-the-art instrumentation, generous new open concept lab space, and a new vivarium with small animal MRI and CT-PET imaging. The Oncology Research Center uses biochemistry, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry analysis of proteins and glycans, new mouse models of ovarian cancer and patient xenografts to study ovarian cancer.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. in biochemistry, biology, or equivalent plus 2 years experience; or a master’s degree with research experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of a B.S. or M.S. in the field of biomedical sciences or basic science
  • Experience in biochemical, cellular, or molecular research areas.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in mouse models of cancer or tumor xenografts in mice.
  • Experience training others in research protocols and animal procedures.
  • Experience working with mice in research in Animal Biosafety Level 2

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY ABILITIES

  • May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
  • May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies to include, but not limited to pens, pencils, calculators, computer keyboards, telephone, etc.
  • May be required to transport oneself to other campus offices, conference rooms, and on occasion, to off-campus sites to attend meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.
  • May require travel or work away from campus.
  • Requires attendance at events representing ACHE both within as well as outside of the college setting.
  • Frequently required to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Frequently required to see for purposes of reading matter.
  • Frequently required to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Occasionally required to lift items in a normal office environment.
  • Frequently required to operate office and presentation equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily molecular biology laboratory experiments using techniques such as flow cytometry, Western blot analysis, microscopy, RNA extraction and real time PCR.
  • Analyze data independently and make new recommendations based on results.
  • Analyze data using computer programs and software.
  • Assist the principal investigator in making figures and writing experimental procedures for research manuscripts.
  • Participate in animal cancer research studies.
  • Participate in cancer research studies using blood, plasma, tissues, or other body fluids from patients and mice.
  • Manage the new Nikon Ti2E AXR confocal microscope as a core resource for the RIHWC. This will involve managing online reservations, performing daily maintenance for the microscope, and educating users on how to use the microscope.
  • Train new employees in animal research activities as needed.
  • Keep daily research notebook records.
  • Train medical students in biomedical research methods.
  • Write standard operating protocols for routine experiments.
  • Order and maintain a stocked laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Oncology Research or their designee.
