Description:
This post will play a crucial role in applying social science to explore parents’ and practitioners¿ views on the acceptability and design of a proposed clinical trial. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a team of leading clinicians, academics and parent representatives with the aim of establishing whether a future trial is feasible.
This study involves three parts. First, a trial that will enrol and randomise 100 children and young people (CYP) into one of three methods (container; catheter; needle). The aim is to assess consent and enrolment numbers, characteristics of those enrolled, and rates of contamination and complications. Second, face-to-face, or online interviews with parents, CYP and clinicians. The aim is to explore their views on the different methods and which age of children would be most acceptable to include in a clinical trial. Third, a meeting to get agreement from parents and clinicians about a future study in terms of the interventions and important outcomes. Parents and CYP will be involved with the conduct of the trial and the dissemination of results.
The project offers the opportunity for a health researcher or social scientist with interests in health-related research to develop their career. You will have a background in social science, psychology, health services or a related subject. You should be experienced in the design, conduct and analysis of qualitative or mixed methods research and have or be about to obtain a relevant PhD or professional doctorate (e.g. chartered health psychologist).
The post is available on a full-time basis, fixed term until 28 February 2026.
