Responsibilities:
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our research aims to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration and the consequent accumulation of disability in progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The Research Associate in Neurodegeneration will be using then latest multi-omics technologies on human post-mortem brain tissues to analyse the molecular pathways that lead to neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative pathology in MS. By analysing ligand receptor interactions at the single cell level in the MS brain, we ultimately aim to identify new drug targets to take forward for therapeutic development
WHAT YOU WOULD BE DOING
You will be optimising and using whole genome spatial transcriptomics to study gene expression at a single cell resolution level on a large cohort of post-mortem MS tissues that are being selected for the presence of more extensive neurodegenerative and inflammatory pathology. This will be followed by bioinformatics analysis of the data to identify genes and pathways of interest. You will then use multiplex immunofluorescence techniques to verify protein expression and in vitro experimental models to begin to understand gene function and relevance to MS pathogenetic mechanisms.
