Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position within the Guder Research Group in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London.
We are looking for a new member to join our team with a background in sensor design and integration. You will be part of a new and exciting project funded by the newly established Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein. The aim of this project is to develop a rapid and high-throughput plant phenotyping platform for the detection of alternative proteins. The technology we want to develop is a modular assay that uses impedance spectroscopy to quantitatively characterise the protein profile of multiple plant samples in parallel. The successful applicant will work on the design and implementation of a modular testing setup for large-scale applications as well as the design and integration of a quantitative protein assay: thus, this project is highly interdisciplinary and will include elements of electrochemistry, design engineering, and embedded systems. The delivery of this technology will allow for the detection and characterization of various plant-based proteins to ultimately determine their efficacy as an alternative protein source to improve food security.

WHAT YOU WOULD BE DOING

Your key responsibilities will involve day-to-day running of the project, including the design of a high-throughput parallel sensing platform for plant-based proteins. You will focus on the design of a sensor that quantitatively characterizes the protein content of a plant sample using electrochemical methods, such as impedance spectroscopy. You will then develop a modular platform that integrates the sensor technology and includes functionalities for data capture, processing, and visualization to perform such analyses at high-speed, low-cost, and large scales. You will assist in the validation of the platform using laboratory standard methods. You will also be responsible for presenting findings to colleagues at internal and external meetings and conferences, collaborating with the consortium partners and providing research updates, and assisting in preparation of manuscripts for publication. Furthermore, you will need to assist in writing reports for the funder and when needed, help write new project proposals for funding.
