ABOUT THE ROLE

The postdoctoral researcher will become part of the Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) team at Imperial College. They will use GERB data to evaluate the performance of a new Outgoing Longwave Radiation product derived from the Flexible Combined Imager flying on the Meteosat Third Generation series of satellites. The post is funded by EUMETSAT. The work will include liaising with the wider national and international GERB team and with US colleagues working on the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy Systems (CERES) project. The post-holder will be expected to deliver written reports to EUMETSAT and submit publications to refereed journals as appropriate.

WHAT YOU WOULD BE DOING

You will validate a newly operational satellite data product developed and produced by EUMETSAT for the meteorological community. You will use data produced by the GERB team working in the UK and Belgium along with similar data from the NASA CERES instrument as comparators. You will be working with large volumes of data which you will analyse, compare statistically and interpret, with an understanding of the algorithms used and the various strengths and weakness of the data products. You will be expected to produce formal reports on the results of your evaluation to EUMETSAT on a predetermined schedule. During the project you will be working closely with the GERB Project Scientist, Jacqui Russell, and liaising with colleagues at RMIB in Belgium.
