A post-doctoral research associate position in data science is available at King’s College London, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). King’s College London is a world-leading institution with cross-cutting interdisciplinary working. This is a new role, suited to an enthusiastic person to join the group of Professor Mona Bafadhel in the King’s Centre for Lung Health to focus on prediction models of exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, clinical data integration and using machine learning techniques to forecast events. The King’s Centre for Lung Health is located at the Guy’s Campus of King’s College London.
About the role
We are looking for someone with a background in computer/data/mathematical science to be dedicated to 3 projects which include developing a COPD exacerbations prediction model, integrating different datasets for data manipulation and working with external collaborators to develop AI models of lung health. The post holder will support the principal investigator and collaborators to conduct research as set out by the objectives of the award and to develop further techniques across modelling lung health. Involved in the project will include continually updating knowledge and understanding in the field, translating advances into research activity and writing research reports and materials ready for dissemination, including but not limited to group meetings, national and international conferences and publications. The post-holder will also work closely within the group and support and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
This is a full-time post (100% full time equivalent), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31 December 2029.
About You
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • PhD awarded in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related subject area*
  • First or Second-Class Honors in mathematics, physics, biomedical engineering or a related subject
  • Advanced programming skills in Python/Matlab/C++
  • Excellent communication and team working skills, both written and verbal
  • A solid research background in a relevant field, supported by published peer-reviewed work
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation
  • An enthusiastic attitude and scientific approach to solving research problems
  • Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.

  • Knowledge of lung health and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Experience/Knowledge of clinical datasets and data merging
  • Experience of building modern database systems
  • Experience of student supervision
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary research
