Description:
A Research Associate position is available for a planetary scientist to undertake research into heavy noble gas isotopic signatures in extraterrestrial samples. The position is in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, under the direction of Prof. Jamie Gilmour and in collaboration with Prof. Rhian Jones and Dr Sarah Crowther. You will join a leading research group of planetary scientists and isotope geochemists with expertise in the analysis and interpretation of extra-terrestrial materials. The post is funded by an STFC Consolidated Grant awarded to The University of Manchester.
We seek candidates with an enthusiasm for undertaking studies of meteorites and their record of the early history of the Solar System. In the project you will use resonance ionization mass spectrometry to study the heavy noble gas isotope systematics of extraterrestrial samples with the particular aim of understanding their cosmic ray exposure history and the record of 129I and 244Pu in samples.
You should have (or will soon obtain) a PhD (or equivalent) in Geology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Planetary Science or a related discipline, and a publication track record commensurate with your academic experience. You will have experience of working in a research laboratory and of undertaking quantitative analyses of geological or extra-terrestrial samples.
