Description:

Applications are invited for the above position to:

  • Conduct policy-relevant interdisciplinary research on shipping system decarbonisation
  • Develop quantitative models and qualitative tools to support stakeholder decision making
  • Involve a strong network of relevant stakeholders within the research
  • Conduct knowledge exchange, policy liaison and outreach to support the project

The post requires a highly motivated and energetic interdisciplinary researcher who is keen to further their research expertise in climate change mitigation strategies for shipping and freight. The individual will be responsible for delivering a project focusing on cutting emissions in the near term, through interventions aimed at existing ship and port infrastructure, including operational practices. The researcher will need to take a systems view of this complex problem and develop quantitative models and qualitative tools to shed light on interventions feasible this decade that can support the sector in accelerating its climate action. They will work with industry stakeholders to understand the barriers to implementation of feasible interventions, and propose actions to address these barriers.
It is expected that the post holder will have good track record of high-quality academic publications for their career stage, a background in quantitative modelling relating to shipping system decarbonisation, a clear understanding of the scale of the climate mitigation challenges around the sector, as well as very strong interpersonal skills to build meaningful and sustainable relationships with industry and policy stakeholders.
The Tyndall Centre conducts interdisciplinary research in the field of energy, decarbonisation and climate change mitigation. www.tyndall.manchester.ac.uk. This post will provide the researcher with a direct link to the wider Tyndall Centre Community, the various Tyndall projects, and be part of a supportive vibrant interdisciplinary team within the University of Manchester.
The role would suit an experienced post-doctoral researcher with an interest in interdisciplinarity that spans the physical and social sciences. The successful candidate must be keen to engage in policy-relevant interdisciplinary activities and have excellent communication and knowledge exchange skills.
