ABOUT THE ROLE

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate to join a project on the application of synthetic biology to synthetic DNA engineering. This project presents a unique opportunity to contribute to advancing our ability to build DNA systems by developing innovative methods for engineering of mammalian cells.
The candidate will work with Dr Ceroni Francesca and Prof Tom Ellis, the project is fixed term for 24 months and funded by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
Synthetic biology has made it possible to repurpose cells to operate as microscale factories, energy sources, and even computers. We are at the stage where novel solutions and wider approaches are needed to enable impact in real life applications.
This post aims to develop novel synthetic biology tools and approaches to achieve improved delivery of large DNA systems into mammalian cells. It is a unique chance to help shape the present and future of synthetic biology. The PDRA will work within the Ceroni group but in close collaboration with other PDRAs at the Ellis and Cai labs and will become part of the Imperial Centre for Synthetic Biology.
The main role of the post holder will be to carry out research in synthetic and molecular biology, undertake project management, write reports, research papers and applications, present the research at conferences, and supervise students. Given the interdisciplinarity of this project, this post is targeted at applicants with a biotechnology/biology/molecular or synthetic biology/bioengineering background. Experience with the field of synthetic biology, bacterial and eukaryotic cell engineering and familiarity with multi-group collaborations are essential requirements. The PDRA will lead their project working across the Ceroni and Ellis groups. Dr Francesca Ceroni is a Senior Lecturer and Prof Tom Ellis is Professor, both based at Imperial College London.

WHAT YOU WOULD BE DOING

The successful applicant will be expected to design and conduct experiments to engineering mammalian cell lines, design and develop genetic constructs via cutting edge molecular cloning protocols, perform transfections and cell characterisation.
Effective project management will be crucial, as the candidate will oversee timelines, resources, and deliverables, ensuring that project milestones are met. Additionally, the applicant will prepare research reports, contribute to scientific publications and to the day-to-day activities of the lab. They will supervise students and engage with the community within the Centre for Synthetic Biology and the Departments of Chemical engineering and Bioengineering. Collaboration with other team members and stakeholders will be essential to integrate findings and advance the project.
